Jura Books

Jura Books Anarchist Bookshop & Library.
440 Parramatta Rd in Petersham, Sydney, so-called “Australia”. Jura Books is on the land of the Wangal people of the Eora Nation.

The Jura Collective acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the Land and pays our respect to Elders past and present. We support the ongoing struggle of Aboriginal people for land rights, self-determination, and justice. At Jura, we are working to create a radically different world: one based on freedom, equality and justice for everyone, as well as environmental sustainability for all life on

the planet. We believe this can only be achieved by an organised and politically conscious social movement, based on participatory democracy and workers control. Our collective aims to help to build this movement. We seek to bring the ideas of anarchism to ever-widening circles of people, through selling and lending books, and many other political activities. We also try to prefigure and nurture alternative social structures through the structures and activities of our collective. This means creating a physical and social space that is liberating, safe, imbued with anarchist politics, and a joy to be in. We invite you to join us! Come along to one of our events or stop by and browse the books anytime we're open (if you're making a special trip, please call ahead to double-check that we're open - we're all volunteers.) We appreciate likes and shares on our page, but even better, please check out our website (http://www.jura.org.au) and sign up to our monthly email (http://eepurl.com/GKs5j). These are better ways to stay in touch than Facebook, with it's restrictive editorial control and pro-capitalist agenda.

Thanks so much to the .collective and the rest of the Chiang Mai crew for having us at the 2026 Chiang Mai Anarchist Zine Fair, and for putting on such a great event!

It was a powerful coming together of people from across the region, connecting and sharing our struggles, and hopefully another step in the long journey towards liberty in Southeast Asia, and the world.

📚 Author Talk: Ralf Ruckus on Social Struggles and Leftwing Opposition in China

Jura Books is excited to announce a presentation by author and researcher Ralf Ruckus on Friday the 13th of March.

In this event, Ralf Ruckus will present the arguments of two books: ‘The Communist Road to Capitalism. How Social Unrest and Containment Have Pushed China’s (R)evolution since 1949’ (PM Press, 2021) provides a history of the social, economic, and political trajectory in China since 1949, while ‘The Left in China. A Political Cartography’ (Pluto Press, 2023) looks deeper into the social conflicts and struggles in China since 1949 and analyses how they inspired different generations of leftwing opposition.

Throughout this history, social struggles have been met by countermeasures from the Communist Party regime, again triggering social conflicts. This dialectic of struggles and countermeasures has been the driving force behind China’s historical development not only during the period of socialism from the 1950s on, but also during the reforms of the 1980s, the transition to capitalism in the 1990s, and the capitalist consolidation until today. Social struggles and leftwing movements have repeatedly challenged the Communist Party regime and produced subversive critiques and practices directed against the oppressive socialist order and later the capitalist system.

🕖 When: 6:30PM Friday 13th of March
📍 Where: 440 Parramatta Rd. Petersham

This event is held on the land of the Gadigal and Wangal people, whose sovereignty was never ceded.

♿️ Note on accessibility: Entrance and bathrooms are located up a set of stairs. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Hey everyone,

This is just a heads up that Jura Books won’t be reopening until Friday the 6th of February. We had hoped to reopen this weekend, but due to unforeseen complications with the renovations upstairs, we haven’t been able to get things ready in time. Thank you for your support, and apologies for any inconvenience. We hope we’ll see you all soon!

📚 We Are Closed in January - Help Us Rebuild Our Upstairs Library and Archives!

Jura Books will be closed throughout January whilst we work to rebuild our upstairs library/archive and organising space.

As long term friends of Jura Books may be aware, our building was seriously damaged during the demolition of the building next door in February 2021. Since then our community library and archives have remained closed. Over the past year we have been working hard to restore the library and return the upstairs space to its former glory, but there is still work that remains to be done.

How Can You Help?
We will be having working bees throughout January, and help is especially requested for January 3rd 2026. The work that needs to be completed includes:
- General cleaning and organising
- Sanding and painting walls
- Reinstalling wall mounted shelves
- Organising and sorting books
- Moving boxes downstairs & upstairs

📍 When: Starting from 11am, 3rd January 2026

🕚 Where: Jura Books, 440 Parramatta Road, Petersham NSW 2049

Another way to contribute and ensure our efforts continue is through donating to our Chuffed fundraiser campaign [link in bio].

If you are able to lend a hand during our working bee on Saturday, January 3rd 2026 (or any other day in January) please message us.

We keep us safe.
Do no harm.
Spread calm.
Take no s**t.

With the rise of weapons and violence being deployed by the state, it is more important than ever to look out for one another and arm ourselves with knowledge of harm minimization.

This workshop, facilitated by an experienced street medic from Naarm, will prepare you to better be able to look out for comrades and yourself when encountering OC/Pepper Spray. Topics covered include common myths, what OC/Pepper Spray is, demo preparedness, deconing in the street and at home, as well as warning signs to be aware of after contact with OC/Pepper Spray.
Join local street medics and like minded people to discuss and practice decon techniques, street medic-ing and harm minimization.

There will be a theory and practical portion, with a break between, so please arrive on time and in appropriate clothing (water will be splashed).
Please be aware that we will be discussing police violence.
