I’m one of the founders of WickWell Gardens — your go-to for self-watering wicking beds that save time, water, and hassle. As a mum who's almost 40, I want to provide my family with nutritious food without the chemicals and love the whole idea of farm to plate. I started this biz after struggling with thirsty gardens in Glenhaven. Fed up with daily watering, I built my first wicking bed —and it changed everything. Now, I help busy folks like you grow lush, low-maintenance gardens with our Australian-made timber beds (installed in a day!). A trellis can completely change how much you get out of a garden bed 🌱

By growing vertically, you’re making better use of the space in your wicking bed and giving climbing plants somewhere to thrive.

A trellis is great for:

Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas and other climbing plants
Keeping produce off the soil and cleaner
Improving airflow around plants
Making harvesting easier

We finally had the opportunity to watch the ABC Four Corners investigation titled "Duped: Food Exposed" which revealed widespread food fraud, misleading country-of-origin labeling, and hidden worker exploitation in Australian supermarket supply chains. This really blew me away! In Australia, we tend to believe that we are somewhat "safe" from this kind of thing. If you haven't seen it, check it out https://share.google/f9dKUgbd82u0f6ipu

Don't have time, here are our key takeaways
❎Labels: Common pantry items and fresh produce did not match their stated origin or ingredients. Import substitution: Overseas goods were routinely repackaged or sold as Australian-grown or Italian-made. For example, cheap tomato paste and products grown in China were sold under labels claiming Italian or Australian origins. Imported fish and seafood from places like Vietnam were marketed to consumers as local catch.
❎Worker exploitation: Investigators uncovered modern slavery and severe underpayment in agricultural sectors.
❎Product Testing in Spices: Laboratory testing on turmeric brands found dangerous adulterants like iron oxide and prohibited lead chromate.

It does make you wonder what is our food really made of? We are glad to have a healthy veggie garden, which enables us to skip some of the supermarket concerns. However, we certainly can do more! It has definitely sparked some ideas, and we will be learning and sharing more with you about our journey in this space.

What to plant in Spring?
Veggies (Early/Mid-Spring): Beans, beetroot, carrots, lettuce, silverbeet, and peas.
Veggies (Late Spring/After Frost): Tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, and sweet corn.
Herbs: Basil, chives, coriander, dill, oregano, parsley, and thyme.
Flowers: Sunflowers, petunias, marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos.

Remember -
🌱Ensure your soil is nutrient rich. Work through some compost if not.
🌱Add a layer of mulch afterwards to protect your new plants and retain moisture from the warmer days.

When it comes to growing food, you want to make sure that you are eating what is safe. Many councils even advertise that the soil in that area is not suitable for a vegetable garden. Soil can be contaminated with toxins such as:
❎Lead
❎Arsenic
❎Pesticides and Herbicides
❎Other Heavy Metals: Elements like cadmium, copper, zinc, and nickel.
❎PFAS ("Forever Chemicals")
