Mars gets things movingggg. Where Venus attracts, Mars pursues. Where Venus softens, Mars cuts. Mars is especially useful when a working needs force behind it. Protection that bites back. A road opener that needs quick momentum. A confidence working before confrontation. Baneful work that requires aggression, domination or severing. It also has an obvious place in seggs magick as Mars rules raw desire, physicality, heat and pursuit.

Here’s a quick flick of a Tarot Box I’ve recently sent off. If you haven’t seen these yet, my 12 Card Tarot Boxes are basically a 6 month tarot forecast combined with a personalised box of ritual products chosen specifically around what comes through in your reading. I pull 12 cards to look at the next 6 months ahead, including the main themes, challenges, opportunities and areas that seem to need a little more attention. I read reversals and I don’t sugar coat the reading. If something difficult comes through, I’ll tell you. If something exciting comes through, I’ll tell you that too of course!

You’ll receive your full written reading printed along with a Polaroid of your actual spread, then I personally choose Witchy Worx products to support what I’ve seen in your cards. So no two boxes are exactly the same. One person might need grounding and protection, another might need to focus more on financials, self love or something completely different.

YOUR LOVE AND LIGHT HERBS HAVE A BANEFUL SIDE. In baneful work, decay can symbolise the deterioration of what a plant usually represents. Something associated with affection, peace or sweetness can take on a different meaning when it’s rotted.

LAVENDER
Usually associated with calm, peace and restful sleep. Rotted lavender could symbolically represent that peace deteriorating into anxiety, agitation and unrest.

MUGWORT
Associated with dreams and psychic work. When decayed it can represent disturbing dreams, nightmares or confusion where there would usually be insight.

ROSE
Associated with love, affection and connection. A rotting rose symbolises resentment, hatred, affection turning sour or a relationship breaking down.

BASIL
We use it for prosperity and harmony. In a decayed state, it could represent stagnation, discord or opportunities deteriorating.

VERVAIN
Associated with purification, protection and enchantment. In a decayed state it can corrupted intentions and fractured peace or disillusionment.

ANGELICA ROOT
Usually used for protection and blessing. In a working centred on decay, it could symbolise protection deteriorating or a place of safety becoming unsettled. You can use it as a tool to break down people’s wards..

Monday is ruled by the Moon, making it a lovely day for magick around intuition, emotional healing, protection and the home. Get some incense going at your altar or spend some time with your journal and see what comes up. And if all you have the energy for is a shower and an early night, then that’s a perfectly good place to start

There are plenty of other herbs you can work with for cleansing and protection, each with its own traditional magickal properties. Here are a few alternatives to explore and choose from based on your intention.

Venus has entered Scorpio and she’s here to dig around in all the stuff we would probably rather leave buried. This transit is complicated. It comes with layers that can bring us face to face with what sits underneath our desires, attachments and relationship patterns.

Love, attraction, money, self worth, intimacy, jealousy, trust, attachment, power dynamics. Venus in Scorpio isn’t interested in keeping things surface level.

But this ingress is extra important because Venus is about to retrograde. In fact we’re already in the pre retrograde shadow which began on 1 September.

So pay attention to what is developing NOW. Relationships, feelings, financial situations, insecurities, old patterns and questions around what you value may become part of a much bigger story over the next few months.

Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio on 3 October, returns to Libra on 25 October and doesn’t station direct until 14 November Sydney time.

I’ve been practicing long enough now to realise that I don’t agree with a lot of the rules and moral absolutes that get thrown around in modern witchcraft spaces.

Witchcraft is incredibly diverse. Different traditions have different ethics, beliefs, boundaries and ways of working. What I believe and practice isn’t going to align with everyone else, and it doesn’t need to. These are my opinions based on my own practice, research and experiences over the years.

I don’t belong to the Indigenous traditions whose ceremonies involve this plant and I won’t package those traditions to profit off. Indigenous ceremonies involving white sage are closed practices. That means participation is governed by the community’s own teachings, relationships and permissions. If a practice is closed you either need to be initiated OR you don’t get access at all.

Something that really bothers me is seeing people sell white sage with no meaningful understanding of the traditions they’re referencing. No cultural context, no acknowledgement of boundaries. Indigenous people have experienced colonisation, dispossession and the suppression of their spiritual practices. There is something deeply disrespectful about outsiders profiting from those traditions and ignoring the people asking them to stop. When you work with white sage you are tapping into a cultural community of spirits and ancestors that have no connection to you. And this disregards that community’s boundaries and the harm their people have experienced. Indigenous communities have different teachings and views. It is their place to explain their protocols and our responsibility to listen.

So next time a white lady tries to sell you white sage as a “smudging kit”, with no connection to the tradition and no respect for Indigenous concerns, run for the hills. That is not ethical practice. There are other plants available for smoke cleansing.

P.S If you weren’t aware of the closed practices associated with white sage and you’ve been using it without a connection to those traditions, you can take that information on board now. You could offer your bundle to someone who belongs to a tradition that uses it. Alternatively you might choose to return the plant material to the earth. I burned white sage at the beginning of my practice. I wasn’t correctly informed and I hadn’t taken the time to research its cultural significance or understand the boundaries around the practices I was copying. We all start somewhere but once we know better we’re responsible for what we do next.
