Last, but certainly not least, ‘Serenade Fairylights’ is being introduced this year ✨
She’s a delight to arrange with - the perfect little cut flower and super productive, so earns her spot in the patch.
Her colour ranges from a soft warm pink to peach to even a pastel neutral under some weather conditions.
I think she’s my personal favourite from the collection this year. 💕

‘Serenade Rosa’ will be available exclusively through Mardi - West Gippsland Flower Farm in her upcoming tuber sale. Sounds like she’ll be a hot favourite and I know that Mardi particularly loves this one and when she took blooms along to the Melbourne Int Flower & Garden show she attracted a lot of attention. 🥰 The colouring in our conditions can be very strong saturated pink (as you can see in these photos) but in cooler southern climates she can tend to a lush muted dustier pink.. so check out Mardi’s photos too. Her petal count is phenomenal with soooooo many layers of petals. That can contribute to green centres when the weather is particularly hot & humid, but they resolve into these gorgeous full blooms with amazing vase life when the weather settles down.

Today’s release feature needs no introduction. ‘Serenade Moondance’ has been on some wish lists since I first spotted her in my first year seedling patch in 2022 season, and I’m delighted to share her with the world this year.
As an exclusive release through Mardi at Mardi - West Gippsland Flower Farm you can only get her online when the sale opens soon (make sure you are signed up to her email list to find out when it goes live). I suspect this will be the most competitive of the Serenades to get hold of this year.
Her strengths are her big tall strong healthy plant and exceptional stems, attachment and bloom position.
As I’ve mentioned before, here in the subtropics when it is particularly hot and humid, she doesn’t fill out into such a deep full bloom, but in cooler climates that doesn’t seem to be an issue, and here I just love her best in early and late season which is when she can get that subtle blush over the white too (mid Summer she tends to all-white for me).
As a bonus she makes a really high proportion of gorgeous seedlings - readily passing on those great cut flower traits to her offspring. Those of you who have my most recent book would have seen many of the gorgeous lines that are derived from this cultivar that I’m now developing further.

She’s a rebel and does her own thing! Always first to the party and starts if bright and bold, and then shifts to softer iterations as the season progresses on. Incredibly floriferous, and such a slash of vibrant colour in garden or vase. This is ‘Serenade Rebel’ and she is such fun!

‘Serenade Symphony’ ranges from a coffee to buttery cream to a soft baby pink depending on light levels as her buds are forming. On the bigger side, my florists adore her for wedding installation work. My retail customers also love a whole bunch of her just plonked in a vase giving such soft elegant romantic vibes.
At the national dahlia society conference fundraising auction she topped the day’s bidding when one tuber sold for almost $500 🥰

My ruffliest release by far is ‘Serenade CanCan’ Her petals bunch and wrinkle like the layers of a cancan Dancers swirling skirt. The tint of lilac from the reverse of the petals tease us from behind soft peachy petal fronts.
Tubers will be available very soon from Mardi - West Gippsland Flower Farm ‘s online tuber sale.

‘Serenade Aria’ will also be available in abundance in the upcoming Mardi - West Gippsland Flower Farm tuber sale. Her soft pink colouring is best developed in cool days. When it’s a lot hotter she’ll tend to be more white base with pink petal tips.. but either iteration makes her a beautiful soft pink to have in your collection. ✨💕🌸
Great stems, attachment & position, she also holds really well in a vase, so makes a great cut flower 💕💕💕

‘Serenade Buttercream’ will be available in Mardi - West Gippsland Flower Farm ‘s tuber sale that is coming up very soon!
An exceptional cut flower with strong stems, secure attachment and perfect head position for arranging. My wedding florists particularly love her, and her buttery warm colour blends beautifully in other pastel palettes too.

Seed starting time for me this week!
Spring Equinox is my reminder that it’s time to start germinating.
It’s not woo woo for some ambiguous cosmic alignment .. it’s science, and it aligns with my workflow, and the conditions here. Equinox means that the days are hitting that 12hr length that is the tipping point when dahlias receive cues to build up vegetative growth. Feeder roots, foliage, strong healthy stems are prioritised when the days are lengthening.
Yes we can “trick” our dahlias into thinking that they are in long days by using indoor growlights, but my lights are busy tricking all my Spring cuttings at the moment, so even if I wanted to I don’t have the space for 2000 seedlings in there.
Instead, I’ll be putting my dahlia seed trays out in full sun, to maximise healthy growth and have them already sun hardened so that as soon as they are happy and strong with around 3-4 pairs of leaves I’ll transplant them straight out, with very minimal transplant shock.
If you didn’t collect any dahlia seed last Autumn, don’t panic, and don’t race around trying to buy seed.
Growing your own seed is SO satisfying and will honestly give you better results than chasing seed from other growers. Only you know what you like best. Think about which your favourite dahlias are that you grow now and plan to hybridise with those. Spring is for planning & planting. Think about which dahlias you plant side by side to optimise bee pollination this season to give you your own amazing seed to look forward next Spring!

Any locals looking to plant dahlias in their gardens this Spring, I have put tuber clumps out on my honesty stall for just $20/clump.
They have a basic label with either their name or colour.
You can divide these up to get multiple plants to grow from each clump.
I’ll also make up a few large mixed mystery boxes for $50 shortly too.
No holds, orders or special requests and I’ll top up as I can, but can’t guarantee to keep stock out there so don’t travel too far otherwise you may be disappointed.
