Removal of Peel Street, Car Parking Meters?
Dear Residents, Ratepayers & Chums
You may have seen car parking reminder signs similar to the example attached throughout Tamworth's C*D. There's a good reason why you are now seeing these signs, which I allude to below.
I would like to hear from C*D business owners, employees, residents and visitors about their experiences with the car parking meters introduced in Peel Street and across the Tamworth C*D in October 2025.
There have been claims that the parking meters have affected customer visitation and business turnover, while others may believe they have improved parking availability and turnover of spaces. I am interested in hearing a range of perspectives and experiences.
Some questions for consideration:
• Has the parking meters affected customer numbers at your business?
• Have you noticed any change in sales or business activity since their introduction?
• Do you believe the meters have improved or reduced access to parking in the C*D?
• Are there particular streets or areas where impacts have been most noticeable?
• If the meters were removed, what effect do you think this would have on the C*D?
• What alternative parking management solutions would you support?
My goal is to see a vibrant and sustainable C*D that supports a diverse range of businesses, services and attractions while ensuring convenient and equitable access to parking for residents and visitors.
During the month of July 2026, your Council collected $37,169.56 in car parking revenue while issuing $198,924.00 in fines, $105,000 of that figure in Peel Street alone. I dare not show you the entire fine revenue take since the installation of the new meters, suffice to say its horrific and I believe sadly, it is chasing shoppers away.
Personally, I would like to see the removal of the meters entirely, but that process will take time and likely have to go to the next local government elections in 2028.
