As part of our new FAQ series, we share practical answers to the most common cable management questions – based on global search behaviour and recurring challenges across industries.

Strength isn’t just about numbers. It’s about matching the right material to the environment and the application.

1️⃣ Stainless steel cable ties offer maximum strength.
They can withstand heat, chemicals, UV exposure and vibration, making them ideal for rail, offshore and heavy industry applications.
2️⃣ Heavy-duty nylon cable ties provide high strength with flexibility.
They absorb vibration well and are typically used in demanding industrial indoor environments.
3️⃣ High‑performance polymer ties are designed for temperature stability and durability. They are commonly used in automotive and aerospace applications.

Why it matters: The right tie supports safety, system longevity and industrial progress – especially where failure is not an option.

As Arafura's Nolans Project moves from construction into a 38-year operating life, every cable, instrument and process asset must remain clearly identifiable.

In a rare-earths processing facility, a missing or unreadable tag isn't an inconvenience - it's a safety, compliance and maintenance risk. UV, chemicals, washdowns and vibration destroy standard identification long before the end of a plant's life.

Permanent identification for harsh plants, from tag to tie to tool:

⚡ MBML Embossed Stainless Marker Plates: corrosion and weather resistant, legible under dust, debris, grease and oil - the permanent tag for cables, conduits and piping.
⚡ 316 Stainless Steel Cable Ties: high-tensile, vibration-resistant fastening that keeps identification and cabling secured for the long haul.
⚡ MK9SST Tensioning Tool: consistent, controlled installation of stainless ties, so every tag is fitted the same way every time.

Reliable asset identification is critical for safe operation, efficient maintenance and long-term compliance.

As the $950.6M New Mandurah Hospital takes shape, electrical contractors can't afford delays, compliance issues, or supply chain setbacks.

That's why project teams rely on HellermannTyton solutions to support critical power distribution installations. From cable termination through to asset identification, every lug, link, and terminal must deliver.

Why partner with us for your Mandurah switchboard and fit-out builds?

✅ Standards you can point to: Compliant to AS/NZS 4325 Part 1:1995 - for demanding commercial and healthcare environments.
✅ Locally stocked: Deep Australian inventory across the most-used lug, link and terminal sizes - and straight answers on availability across the full 1.5mm² to 630mm² range before you commit a programme.
✅ Pre-Insulated Terminals: covering conductor sizes up to 6mm² - the everyday termination range, held locally.

For critical healthcare infrastructure, certainty in compliance, supply and performance matters.

Heat shrink tubing vs. electrical tape – how permanent should your connection be?

Electrical tape and heat shrink tubing are designed for different use cases:
Electrical tape
- fast and flexible
- often used for temporary or low‑stress applications

Heat shrink tubing
- forms a closed and stable insulation
- protects against movement, abrasion and ageing
- supports long‑term reliability

In short: Tape can be practical. Heat shrink tubing is usually the better choice when connections are meant to last.

HellermannTyton Australia will be at Data Centre World Australia this week 🏢⚡

From 7-9 September at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Australia's data centre community comes together at a defining moment for the sector - with AEMO projecting data centre electricity demand to grow from around 5 TWh today to as much as 34 TWh by 2035-36.

Our team will be on the floor across all three days, talking to the engineers, contractors and operators building that capacity - about cable management, identification and installation practices for the builds now under way across Australia.

Attending the show? We'd welcome a conversation. Send us a message to arrange a time, or simply say hello when you see us.

👋 See you in Melbourne.

As Arafura's Nolans Project is scheduled to begin main construction this month, one of the largest and most intensively explored deposits of its kind in the world is officially taking shape 135 km north of Alice Springs.

It's the processing plant where conditions get truly demanding. In rare earths processing, electrical infrastructure lives with acids, solvents, chemical washdowns, extreme heat and intense UV - an environment that can dramatically reduce the service life of standard electrical components.

Material selection matters more here than almost anywhere else and it's a range decision, not a single product:

⚡ 316 Stainless Steel Cable Ties: for the harshest chemical, washdown and high-temperature zones.
⚡ Tefzel Cable Ties: suitable for aggressive chemical environments and temperatures up to 170°C. UL94 V-0 rated.
⚡ Beyond those, the engineered-polymer range - PP, PA46 and PEEK grades - can be specified where the environment demands it.

In critical processing infrastructure, reliability often comes down to the smallest components and to choosing their material on day one.

Contact our team to talk material selection for chemical and processing environments, from a single specification question to a full-project cable management package.

Storm Season Is Coming. Minimise Risk and Maintain Operations ⛈️☀️

Severe wind, localised flooding and large-scale hail can pose significant risks to utility-scale solar farms across QLD and NSW.

Storm season preparation helps identify vulnerabilities and assess system readiness. For example, cable fixings that have become brittle from prolonged UV exposure can fail, allowing critical cabling to drop onto sharp metal edges or the ground, increasing the risk of damage and outages.

Before the weather turns, help keep critical assets operational by prioritising weather-resistant components:
✅ Switch Materials: Upgrade to UV-stabilised or PA612 cable ties that are designed for harsh outdoor longevity.
✅ Go Stainless Steel: Use 316 stainless steel ties or robust metal edge clips in high-vibration tracker applications.
✅ Prevent Friction Wear: Use Ratchet P-Clamps with a specialised interior that guides and centres cable bundles, preventing the pinching and chafing caused by wind-induced vibration.

Taking the time to review infrastructure before storm season can strengthen asset resilience, minimise downtime and reduce the risk of costly outages.
