Fysshe Lures

Fysshe Lures I made my first lure in 1970 and caught a Bass in the Williams River on it. I was now hooked.

Finally finished this recent set of "Calliope" lures, time to fit hooks and test swim. The board is starting to fill again. Now to start on a few "Teemburras" and a display set of "Wivenhoes" Weather is a lot cooler now so I can stay in the shed a little bit longer...

Another couple of display sets done and dusted. It's been awhile since I did a "Nemo" set but they came out nice! Also a set of smaller 'Calliope' lures from Aussie timbers. I also completed a Killalure resto set that will be going on sale shortly. Hoping to get the boat out tomorrow it has been sitting idle for months!!

I'm very happy with my last project; making a set of natural Australian timber lures for my grandson Vance's birthday. Auspost was efficient and they arrived a day early and he's chuffed to have them and on display on a shelf in his bedroom.
I also finished the restorations on the old Leads and Lee's lures in a nice Mackerel blue pattern. I still have some more Leads and Killas to complete yet but the weather is getting cooler, so I can spend a lot more time on them now.
I even manage a couple of sessions down the beach and managed to land a couple of feisty small Barra. I was testing a slightly modified 'Calliope' lure, a bit fatter body for more bouyancy. It definitely worked with quite a few hits...

After a couple of failures of my 35 year old Frogge bibs, I was asked if I could come up with a stronger design suitable for Barra. I played around with my template and lengthened the standard size and cut out a thicker bib from 2mm poly. It was then heated and shaped in the old 'stepped' shape. Thicker and longer stainless hook points, heavier and bigger VMC trebles and a towpoint attached to the body of the lure. It seemed to work okay and swims well. Timber was Red Cedar. I also did a resto on an old 'Tiger' style minnow lure with thru wire construction and built in rattle. Despite the large bib, it has a great action in the water. Last pic is the last set of Frogges I made with the old bib material. The black/yellow one is now floating around in the Bohle River.

Slowly getting some more Barra lures ready for when the rain stops!! Re-painted my Favourite Yellow Calliope 3". Made up some classic Calliopes from recycled white Beech I rescued from the laundry reno. And had some nice Oregon Pine that looked so good, I made a couple of semi-nude lures. Got some more old Leads, Killa and Lees ready to re-paint soon also.

Had my daughter Sarah and grandson Vance up here recently for a flying visit. While they were here, we tried a bit of fishing but the heat was quite oppressive and only a few Rays were landed. Vance tried his hand at designing some lures with help from mum and the Lure Encyclopaedia. His designs were unique to say the least but I've managed to transfer them to timber and see what turns out. He said that one drawing looked like a "turd", so I did that one in a "brown" colour. They all swim but the "fish shaped" one may need some belly weight to get a different action. Will send them down soon for him to try out.

Just an update on what's been happening lately. I was asked to make a replica "Billy Bonito" lure which actually turned out quite nice. Made from a nice piece of red cedar that was given to me ages ago by Gavin Marshall. And no, I won't be making any more! LOL. Got a few scars from roughing that one out. A set of Calliope lures for a loyal client who returns each year. And some resto's including a full set of Cotton Cordell lures, already snapped up by a mate.

Very hot and humid up here now so nothing much happening in the shed. I did manage to get some 'Resto's' done, 2 Reidy's Big Barras and some old Manns lures that had seen better days. In the process of getting some Barra lures finished before the season opens next year also. I had a short session up the freshwater this weekend but the walking nearly killed us!! We had one nice Barra hit but threw the lure!! Got a good size cheek scale on the treble though... Had to settle for a couple of Sootys and a Tarpon..

Haven't put much up on Facebook for a while as we've been doing a bit of re-decorating, but finally got some more lures finished. Another pack of lures for Jack down in Mackay and some reno's. 2 old Creek Chub lores from the U.S. got the treatment with a full strip, re-design with a change to 2 hook hangers from the original 3, and a freshwater 'Cod' style paint scheme. They turned out okay but not real impressed with their action in the water, maybe that is how they are supposed to swim with a wide action.
I got a few pictures from Nigel after their epic northern adventure to the "Cape"... I will add them to this post. The surface 'Frogges' are working well with a few more species taken!

Some action in the workshop lately! A few 'C' Lures to restore along with a few Nth QLD unknowns... Also played around with a couple of offcuts and knocked up a couple of randoms. My 20 year old faithful Surecatch lure got smashed by a freshwater barra recently and got a makeover with new eyelets and a bib, ready for 20 more years!! Also a strange thin lure I found on Ebay got the treatment as well. Another project I have been planning was to upgrade a couple of old Shakespeare 'Pike Getums' with 2 twisted stainless hook hangers to replace the 3 saddles. They look the goods, now to test them out on some local fish. I even have an old "Wonder" rod by Shakespeare and an old blue 2430 reel to use. Should be fun on the "Retro" gear...
