Pruning is important because it keeps your plant healthy. However, it is just as important to remember how crucial undergrowth is to our lovely native animals! When you undercut your shrubs and grasses, their habit and protection is taken away. Undergrowth provides a shelter for smaller birds, reptiles and native mammals and marsupials, protecting them from harsh weather conditions and predators.

Here are the four different species of Pterostylis we have at Harvest. From smallest to largest, these photos are of Pterostylis pedunculata (Little Red Riding Hood), Pterostylis nodosa (Nodding Greenhood), Pterostylis curta (Blunt Greenhood), and Pterostylis baptistii (King Greenhood). These native orchids flower in winter and are absolutely beautiful despite their small size!

Native grasses play a huge role in supporting biodiversity in our gardens. At Harvest Seeds & Native Plants, they’re at the heart of what we do. Our founder, Marina, started her journey with native grasses, driven by the fact that across Australia, only a small fraction of native grasslands remain intact.

Grasslands are vital ecosystems. They form the foundation of complex food webs, providing habitat and food for a diverse range of insects. These little creatures in turn, feed our native fauna. Birds rely on the seeds produced by the grasses and use the foliage for nesting and shelter.

By planting native grasses, you’re helping to restore ecosystems and bring biodiversity back to your local environment.

Angophora hispida 'Dwarf Apple'

When it comes to rugged beauty, this plant truly stands out. With its twisted growth, gnarled branches, and rough, peeling bark, this small tree (up to 6m) adds texture and character.

Its young branches are covered in reddish hairs, and come January, creamy white flowers bloom in clusters, which are a magnet to nectar feeding birds, insects and various colourful beetles.

Native to the Hawkesbury sandstone region of NSW, this hardy plant is a great feature that tolerates a wide variety of soils types, and coastal exposure. Available in tube stock, 140mm and 200mm sizes.

Big shout out to Marina and staff at Harvest Seeds and Native Plants who as usual donated tube stock for the National Tree planting day.
Marina has been a long supporter of the DFRA and any bush regeneration project.
