Documentation of Patrick Pound – L is for lonely (Perimeter Editions 135). Join us for the launch in store from 3pm today, featuring a conversation between Patrick Pound and Daniel Palmer. Copies of the regular edition, plus a limited number of the special edition, are available to purchase!

The special edition of 25 copies includes a unique hand-painted photo collage by the artist, along with a signed and editioned copy of the book.

Patrick Pound skirts the line between artist and pictorial treasure hunter. Digging through online marketplaces, estate sales, and flea markets, the New Zealand-born, Australian-based artist has amassed more than 80,000 photographs in his multi-decade career, organising his collection into 130 categories. L is for lonely – which follows Windows, his 2024 book for Perimeter Editions – once made for a compelling drawer of prints in his studio. It now makes for an even more compelling book.

Here, loneliness is found in animal and human form, in all kinds of people and places, and in states of feeling. Strangely, there is comfort and life to be found in the saturation of these stories, and the melancholy beauty of these remnant lyrical documents. While the material culture on display is beautiful and rich – in all its manky newspaper reportage and cinematic splendour – it is also somehow prescient. In these photographs, the present is reflected right back at us. For Pound is not simply interested in these documents for nostalgic returns. Rather, he redeploys them to re-read the past and to rethink the present, with the future front of mind.

As the artist puts it: ‘When you collect under a single collection constraint, the rest of the world always sneaks in.’ Race, class, s*x, gender, crime, politics, and some fun, find their way into the scheme of things. There are laughs and there are moments that might just pull you up. Like a lonely hearts club, this book is full of all kinds of loneliness.

The hot new issue of A Magazine (Antwerp) –A Manual for Living Curated for Nike – is available online and in store. // Link to store in bio! // A Manual for Living Curated for Nike explores the internal intelligence of the global sportswear brand known for its innovation in service of athletes. The publication is organised into five sections: Mind, Body, Soul, Desire, and Imagination. Each section features exercises and challenges meant to be annotated and actioned, informed by the hybrid of sport science, athlete mindset, and creative practice. It functions as a manual, intended as a tool to deepen understanding not only of the human psyche but also the way in which it connects with others and engages with the world. Contributions come from voices within Nike’s world as well as artists and practitioners beyond it.

L is for lonely comprises photographs from defunct and dispersed cinema and newspaper archives. Each of the photographs contains the word ‘lonely’ or ‘loneliness’. The word might appear in a film title on the front of a picture, or in the original associated press article attached to the back of a newspaper photograph. Every photograph is depicted from both sides.

Link to store in bio. // Taken as an ideal, the function of the library is to act as a kind of collective mind. Much like information is retained and filed away in applicable zones of the brain during sleep, so too does the library collect and archive language, data, ephemera, and individual and collective histories – preserving these artefacts in relevant catalogues until we need to draw upon them again.

But this institutionalised, synthesised brain suffers from similar fallacies to its biological counterpart; things are misplaced, misnomered, or missed entirely. It is here in the unknown – the dark matter, sitting between the structure of the archive – that new connections occur. What generative potential rests in image fragments, incomplete records, partially told stories?

Edited by Kate Rhodes and Rory Hyde, and published alongside a major exhibition at State Library Victoria, You Have a New Memory explores the creative possibilities of memory loss in the library. Tracing a path through the State Library’s 4.5 million collection items, this book unearths images that ask us to reexamine how a library remembers, and how our own thoughts interact with the memories of others.

Co-published by Perimeter Editions and State Library Victoria, and designed by Stuart Geddes and Žiga Testen, You Have a New Memory is an invitation to wander through the architecture of the collective mind, thinking with memories from the past and pointing them towards the future.

In the last three decades, creative practice disciplines, such as art, design, architecture, creative writing, fashion, and others, have undergone a ‘research turn’, strongly stimulated by doctoral programmes to deepen artists’ reflections on the roots, relevance and urgencies of their work. There are many reasons why an individual practitioner might decide to undertake a PhD: a desire to uplift one’s practice, to contribute to the intellectual artistic climate, to teach, to pursue an academic career, or some combination of these, or other reasons.

The rise of artistic research or practice-based research is subtly transforming these disciplines. The integration of research into practice, however, has not always been smooth, and the transformations not unequivocally positive.

For this book we issued an open call to ask artists how PhD research has influenced their making and thinking. Our questions were: What are the impacts, urgency, and significance of the PhD for creative practitioners? How are these understood, captured, communicated? How did it change your practice? We even asked: should creative practitioners undertake a PhD in the first place?

Through its thirty contributions Thinking Back, Making Forward tackles these questions in an open way, to acknowledge, equally, the advantages and disadvantages of the creep of the PhD into artistic practice.
