It was Lake Toolondo’s turn today!
Ben from Snobs got an early start for the big drive west to deliver 10,000 rainbow trout yearlings, complementing 9,500 browns we stocked in July.
All of these trout are part of our grand-plan to get Toolondo back on its feet and providing fantastic trout fishing opportunities for anglers.
One crucial element to its recovery was our concerted effort in 2022 to remove carp. Stacks of them!
With support from the Wimmera CMA and Horsham Angling Club, we contracted carp-specialist Keith Bell (pictured) to go all-out on carp extraction. It worked too, and 130 tonnes of carp were harvested, making room for the trout fishing revival that’s underway. Stay tuned for next winter when our stocked trout from last year and this year have had another year to grow!

This wetland dried out, carp were prevented from returning using a screen, and the system filled again naturally.

Better water quality is one of the reasons we’ll be developing a plan for the trial controlled release of the carp virus in Victoria, pending approval by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

We want to be well prepared if the green light is given to proceed, with a plan that’s ready to implement.
