Whitefly can become a serious problem fast — especially in warm, protected growing environments.
A good Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is about getting on top of the problem before populations explode.
🔍 MONITOR
Check the undersides of leaves regularly and use yellow sticky traps to detect adult whitefly early.
🐞 USE BENEFICIALS
Biological controls available in Australia include Eretmocerus hayati and Montdorensis predatory mites, including slow-release sachets. Introducing beneficials early gives them the best chance of establishing before pest pressure becomes heavy.
🎯 TARGET
If whitefly numbers start increasing, use appropriate, label-approved treatments. Remember — eggs and immature whitefly are predominantly found on the undersides of leaves, so good coverage matters.
🔄 ROTATE
Whitefly can develop insecticide resistance. Avoid repeatedly using the same mode of action and follow resistance-management recommendations and product labels.
🧹 PREVENT
Keep growing areas clean, remove heavily affected leaves and weeds, maintain good airflow and continue monitoring even after populations decline.
The key is simple: find them early, manage them early, and don't rely on one control method.

🌱 PRE-CHARGE YOUR COCO BEFORE YOU TRANSPLANT
Starting with a properly hydrated and charged coco bag gives your plants the best possible start.
Before transplanting:
💧 Mix – Prepare your nutrient solution at around EC 2.5–3.0 and pH 5.7–5.9.
💧 Saturate – Slowly irrigate the coco until the entire bag is evenly wet. Make sure there are no dry pockets.
💧 Drain – Allow runoff and then let the excess solution drain from the bag.
🌱 Transplant – Once drained, your coco is hydrated, charged and ready for roots.
If you're using a substrate sensor, coco will commonly settle somewhere around 45–65% WC/VWC at field capacity, depending on the coco, bag size and composition. Record this number — it's a useful baseline for managing your irrigation going forward.
❌ Don't transplant into dry coco.
Getting the root zone right from day one makes everything easier.
