You will find flutes, clarinets, trumpets and saxophones in the special buys aisle this week. đź‘€

No judgement - we love a bargain as much as anyone.

But if you're thinking about getting one for your child (or fulfilling a life-long dream of your own), we'd like to point out a few shortcomings about grocery-store instruments.

There's a reason why reputable music shops don't stock instruments this cheap.

Come in, ask questions, try things out. That's what we're here for.

And let's keep more poor quality impulse buys out of landfill, because we don't call them disposable for nothing!

We do want to know though- what is the most random thing you've bought on impulse in that magical middle aisle?

Shoes shined, lunchboxes washed, instruments… slightly dusty in the corner?

As the school bags come out and the early mornings return, it’s worth giving your child’s instrument a little post-holiday check-in.

If it’s been resting quietly in its case for a few weeks (or months… we're not here to judge!) here’s how to get it ready for another year of playing:

✨ Check that your corks haven't deteriorated or pads fallen off
✨ Your valves and slides move freely and are oiled
✨ Give it a gentle wipe over with a microfibre cloth, and if the instrument is silver plated, you can use a silver polish cloth
✨ Replace old reeds and top up oils/grease
✨ Make sure nothing feels sticky, stiff or leaky

A quick check over now can save last minute rushing when band starts again and help your child start the year sounding their best.

And if something doesn’t feel right? Bring it in. We’re always happy to take a look.

That’s a wrap for the year 🎄
As we close the doors for a short break, we just want to say thank you. Truly.

Every visit to the shop, every purchase, every repair booked, every recommendation passed on… it all adds up. Supporting a small, family-run business like ours doesn’t just keep the lights on. It supports real people, real livelihoods, and provides the energy it takes to show up day after day during the busiest time of year.

Your support allows us to keep doing what we love, to keep helping students start their music journey, to keep school programs running smoothly, and to be here when instruments need a little extra care. That means more than we can put into words.

We’ll be back from the 5th of January, refreshed and ready for another big year of back-to-school music, repairs, and everything in between.

Wishing you and your families a safe, happy Christmas and a wonderful start to the new year.

Thank you for choosing to shop local, and for choosing us 🎺🎶

🎺 Now Stocking: Jupiter Brass & Woodwind! 🎷

We’re excited to officially welcome Jupiter to the McKenzie Music family!

Jupiter has been a well-known name in brass and woodwind for years – but the new Australian range is something special. With entirely new models never before seen in Australia, plus upgrades to the standard line-up, this is Jupiter reimagined.

The team at Orchestral Supplies Australia recently toured the KHS factory in Taiwan (Jupiter’s parent company) and witnessed first-hand their state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, incredible attention to detail, and the best quality-control systems they have ever seen. And they’ve brought that quality home – selecting only the best for Aussie players.

From entry-level and intermediate instruments through to the stunning XO Brass professional range, Jupiter is stepping up – and we’re thrilled to offer it in-store.

Come in and see (and play!) what the new Jupiter is all about.

📍 We currently have some of the intermediate range in store, with the rest to follow by the end of the month!

The shop will be shut this Saturday 1st March, as Gav and Renae will be rehearsing for something super exciting!

The fabulous Lorraine Fuller and Morgan Chalmers have put together an amazing group of musicians from Toowoomba to form a full symphonic wind ensemble for a one-time-only performance that promises to captivate and inspire.

It's not too often that you get to experience the power and majesty of such a big ensemble, (not to mention get to play in one!) and for only a donation at the door, you can experience it too!

Check out the link below for more details, it's a concert not to miss!
