A couple weeks ago, we got to attend and represent at the official "explain home" handover with wilya_janta. When we were first brought on to the project it was impressed upon us, the current housing crisis in regional NT communities and concept that would solve these challenges. The design and build a testament to where technology and traditional knowledge can intersect and produce an outcome that acknowledges it while writing tech into our story.
Through collaboration with Warumungu Traditional Owners, Wilya Janta has set out to solve the housing crisis by developing culturally appropriate, climate ready and cost effective homes with a fast-track construction timeline, designed by and for the folks that will live in them. "Wilya Janta" means standing strong and at its core this project is about empowerment and resilience.
There is no perfect system irrespective of intention and this is an opportunity to prove what private enterprise and advocacy can accomplish when aligned in values and in a common goals.
We're hoping to eventually augment regional community housing design and contribute to the framework of its delivery to produce better outcomes for all stakeholders.
The team have successfully completed and handed over the first of what we hope will be many, self sufficient homes and it would be wrong not to express gratitude to folks that help made this happen.
