Locally, what goes around, comes around. But when you choose to ship in, all the benefits ship out. "Bookshops are pillars of civilization, reservoirs of the imagination. There is nothing like being greeted by someone who is literate and decent and who reads and is happy to show you around. But if you use Amazon and that works for you, that’s fine too. The world changes, and hopefully we’ll adapt. Certainly, we have it in our power to sustain bookshops. You simply have to use them…” Tim Winton

Monday means we get to look back at the week's top sellers... and what a stack it is. 🧡

Seeing Cold River in this week's top sellers makes us especially happy. While we didn't get the chance to host .hickey.35 as we'd hoped, it's lovely to see our readers embracing her newest book.

The latest Oceanforged has also been a huge hit. It was finished in our house almost as soon as it arrived, and we know there are plenty of Mary Who? families who have been counting down for this one.

We've also loved seeing so many readers excited to dive into Maria Takolander's The End of Romance. And with all the buzz around The Odyssey movie, it's no surprise Homer's epic has found its way back into so many hands.

Did you take home any of these last week, or is there one you've got your eye on?

Tuesday mornings mean one thing around here... Book Chat with Tenille on ABC Local Radio🎙️

This week we're talking about two very different reads.

Whistler by Ann Patchett was an instant staff favourite at Mary Who? Warm, wise and quietly moving, it's one of those novels that reminds you why Patchett is one of the finest storytellers writing today. If you love beautifully observed relationships and stories that stay with you long after the final page, don't miss this one.

Talking Classics by Mary Beard is a joyful, witty exploration of why the ancient world still matters. Drawing surprising connections between antiquity and today—from revolutionaries to pop culture—Beard fills every page with fascinating stories, curious facts and her trademark warmth, proving the classics are anything but dusty.

Have you read either yet, or will one of these be finding its way onto your TBR this week?🧡

Monday = reflecting on the books you loved most last week!

What a fantastic week of books. We were privileged to be the booksellers at 's Townsville performance, where readers embraced 's remarkable work. The enthusiasm on the night saw Sonam and the Silence, Sound Bites and Danger Music claim this week's top three spots. We completely sold out of Danger Music, so while it earned its place in the Top 3, it sadly missed making it into the photo!

Elsewhere in the top 10 stack, Katie is still passionately pressing Billie King by .kelly.white into the hands of anyone who'll listen. She's convinced it's destined to become a modern Australian classic, and judging by the response from our Mary Who? community so far, she might just be onto something.

Week after week, we're reminded just how brilliant your reading taste is. Which of these have you already read, and which one's calling your name next? 🧡

TOP TEN THIS WEEK🧡

Another week, another incredible Top Ten... and once again you've proven that the Mary Who? community has exceptional taste.

This week's Top Ten is packed with remarkable books, including the two Women's Prize winners sitting proudly in the stack. Add in standout literary fiction, thought-provoking memoir, a beautiful local children's books and a little nature writing, and you've created a list that's as diverse as it is brilliant.

Did you pick up one of these last week? Or is there one you've had your eye on that's just waiting to come home with you?

Thank you for continuing to support thoughtful books, brilliant authors and your local independent bookshop. We love seeing the incredible range of stories that find their way into your hands each week.

📻 BOOK CHAT TUESDAY

Tenille was back on ABC local radio this morning with two very different reads, both exploring connection, belonging and the stories that shape us.

📖 A Short History of Longans by Mirandi Riwoe
A beautifully written multigenerational novel tracing an Irish-Chinese family across four generations in Australia. Moving through centuries, secrets and memories, this is a tender story of ancestry, longing and what it means to belong.

🌏 Beyond Timbuktu by Catherine DeVrye
Part travel narrative, part memoir and a wonderful reminder of our shared humanity. Drawing on journeys through more than 150 countries, Catherine shares stories of kindness, courage and connection that show us there may be far more that unites us than divides us.

Two wonderful books to add to your reading pile this week🧡

We really do love seeing what our Mary Who? community is reading each week — you lot have excellent taste!

Whistler has taken out the top spot as our Book Club read for this month, and we're very excited to see The Nocturnals in the Top 10 too, with heading our way for a fantastic event next week! 🧡

Such a brilliant mix in this week's stack — new releases, Australian stories, fascinating non-fiction and plenty of very good reading.

Thank you, as always, for choosing our little independent bookshop and filling your shelves with books from ours 🧡📚

📻 ABC LOCAL RADIO BOOK CHAT WITH TENILLE

Both of today's titles have a northern flavour, with our fiction pick written by a Brisbane author and our non-fiction selection all about plants of the north!

Brave, compassionate and humorous, People Like Us by Sally Piper is a novel about the very best kind of friendships. After Tina Lamb loses her family home in a bitter divorce, she finds herself living in a caravan on the city’s fringes. Having raised four children and nursed her dying mum, she was not anticipating making a new start alone or from scratch. And while some of her new neighbours are welcoming, she soon finds herself getting far more attention than she bargained for.

Meanwhile, the reimagined, fully transformed new edition of Native Plants of Northern Australia is now illustrated with more than 1,000 new photos throughout. It also includes 90 additional plants, bringing the comprehensive coverage to 530 native species of the region.

☀️Weekend Reads at Mary Who?☀️

The weather is absolutely spectacular here in Townsville this weekend... the kind that calls for a comfy chair, a cup of something delicious and a brand-new book.

Here's what we're diving into:

📖 Katie is reading Billie King by debut Australian author Shannon Kelly-White — a bold, funny and fiercely original story about one determined young woman fighting to protect the only family she has in 1930s Australia. We have a feeling this one's going to be something special.

🔎 Zac has had a run of non-fiction and is ready for a thriller, picking up Neighbourhood Watch by Lauren Williams. Full of simmering suburban tension, secrets and twists, this one looks like the perfect weekend page-turner.

📚 Erin's weekend read is new release The Knowledge by Tagalaka man Victor Steffensen. Carrying on from Fire Country, Steffensen shares traditional ecological knowledge and cultural burning practices, building a positive pathway for managing bushfires and floods around the world.

👉 Swipe to see what Tenille has packed! She's spending the week down south with three books at the ready. With those spectacular hotel balcony views, we hope she's finding plenty of time to put her feet up, soak up the sunshine and disappear into a few great stories.

What are you reading this weekend? We'd love to hear what's keeping you turning the pages. 🧡

📻 ABC LOCAL RADIO BOOK CHAT WITH TENILLE

This week’s books both ask us to look beyond what we think we know, exploring the mysteries that sit just beyond everyday experience.

Capture by Amanda Lohrey follows a psychiatrist drawn into a research project investigating people who claim to have experienced alien abduction. What begins as a curious academic exercise soon becomes something far stranger, challenging assumptions about truth, belief and the limits of what we can explain. Thought-provoking, unsettling and deeply human. ✨

Alongside it, In Search of Now by Jo Marchant explores the science of presence in a world full of distractions. Drawing on cutting-edge research, Marchant examines what happens when we slow down, pay attention and reconnect with the moment we're in. 🌿

One explores the mysteries beyond us, the other the possibilities within us — both offering fascinating new ways of seeing the world.
