WHAT IN THE BEEFSTEAK TOMATO IS THIS?! 🍅😳
No, we haven’t accidentally started stocking small purple pumpkins.
This magnificent, slightly unhinged-looking specimen is an heirloom beefsteak tomato.
So what does heirloom actually mean?
Heirloom tomatoes come from older, open-pollinated varieties whose seeds have been saved and passed down through generations, rather than modern hybrids specifically bred for things like uniform size, perfect shape, long shelf life and surviving transport.
THAT is why heirlooms can look a little wild.
They can be lumpy. They can be ribbed. They can be purple, burgundy, orange, yellow, green or almost black. Two tomatoes from the same plant might not even look identical.
What they lack in supermarket-model good looks, they tend to make up for in character and flavour. 🍅👌
This big fella is also beefsteak-type, meaning lots of thick, fleshy tomato and fewer watery seed cavities. Perfect for big slices, burgers, sandwiches and salads.
At Salads Galore, we see a LOT of fresh produce come through our doors, but every now and then Mother Nature sends us something that deserves its own photoshoot.
This one absolutely did.
Fresh produce doesn’t have to be perfect to be bloody good.
