After years of hiking and fly fishing across the Snowy Valleys, it was time for Pat to experience the landscape a little differently. Bikepacking the backroads from Jugiong to Tumut was the trip of choice. With great weather, smooth riding and a primo campsite on the banks of the Bidgee, it’s a reminder that there’s all an outdoor adventure waiting in your backyard.

Chimney Rock is a rugged and wild hike in Kosciuzsko National Park offering incredible views over the Snowy Valleys. With just enough room to squeeze a bivy bag, Chris geared up for a mid week, winter getaway when the weather was right. After a steep, weaving climb, the payoff of a top tier sunset and panoramic views made the trip pretty special.

Round Mountain Hut marks the final chapter of the Kosciuszko Huts Rebuild Program, bringing to a close one of the most significant heritage restoration projects ever undertaken in Kosciuszko National Park.
In this final film of the eight part series we look back on the entire rebuild program following the devastating 2019–20 bushfires, which saw 11 historic huts restored through the dedication of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Kosciuszko Huts Association, descendant families and hundreds of volunteers.

From the ashes of the 2019-20 bushfires comes the masterfully rebuilt Round Mountain Hut. Thank you to the tireless efforts of NPWS Project Manager Megan Bowden and builders Roger Rosenboom and Peter Dow. The final chapter of the Kosciuszko Huts Post Bushfire Rebuild series is now available to watch on the Tom’s Outdoors YouTube channel.

Today, Chris and Pat teamed up with the Tumut Valley Canoe Club to clean up a 5km stretch of the Tumut River for day.

We collected plenty of bottles and general rubbish along the way but what’s most concerning is the number of inflatable beds abandoned in the river. These don’t just disappear, please don’t leave them in the river.

We’re lucky to live in such an incredible community and looking after our backyard isn’t just important, it’s essential to the long term health of our rivers.

A big thank you to Wayne Skein for allowing us to pull out at his campsite and supporting the effort.

Let’s all do our part to keep the Tumut River (and all our waterways) clean and thriving.
