Being intentional: Knowing why we lead/teach the way we do?

Whether it is implicit or explicit, something guides our practice as outdoor educators. This workshop aims to help you clarify what that something is. There are many advantages to being clear about why we lead/teach the way we do. It helps us talk to employers or potential clients about our practice. It can help with decision making about program design. It can guide the way we facilitate a group. It can stimulate our reflection on our practice. It can clarify your professional development needs. It can inform staff training.

In this workshop, you will engage in a series of online sessions combined with some reflection sessions (which you can do as an individual or an organisation). The goal is that organisations will make progress towards establishing a pedagogical framework and that individuals will begin to articulate their personal leadership/teaching philosophy. All Queensland schools (including outdoor centres) are expected to have a pedagogical framework – it’s a chance to get all staff β€˜on the same page when it comes to how you lead/teach your programs.

Please come to the session with a willingness to listen and learn from others and to reflect on your own practice. You won’t be told what to think or what should guide your practice. The workshop will run for approximately 4 hours and will include time β€˜offline’ where you work individually or with your colleagues. Participants will be sent some pre-course reading and a link to the online zoom meeting.

Facilitator:
Dr Glyn Thomas (FOEA, FHERDSA) from the University of the Sunshine Coast has been researching, teaching, and writing about intentionality since 1992. He has won numerous awards and fellowships that require him to articulate why he teaches the way he does.
