Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke ($34.99)

Natalie is an internet “tradwife”, or a traditional wife that abides by traditional values that place women as mothers, caregivers, and homemakers. But behind the façade of her social media personality, at her homestead farm, she has a whole team behind her and her husband: two nannies to care for the five, going on six, children; numerous farmhands whose work is attributed to her husband, and a social media manager. Just as the foundations of Natalie’s world begins to crumble, she one day wakes up in the mid-18th century, in a home where she truly is a traditional wife without the many luxuries she has become so reliant on.

I would best describe Yesteryear as almost a psychological thriller. We dive deep into Natalie’s life before and after fame, and the extreme lengths she will go to find success. Natalie is a deeply unlikeable character – jealous, ambitious to the point of cruelty, and manipulative. Hearing her inner thoughts is uncomfortable – yet that was something that I enjoyed most about the book. If you enjoyed thrillers such as Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, this would be perfect for you. I personally have been fascinated about the tradwife movement for quite a few years, so this book was right up my alley. The twists were executed well, and I loved the way Burke was able to bring to life such an eerie and twisted world. This book does include child abuse/neglect, domestic violence and mental illness. I would recommend it to anyone interested in tradwives, societal trends or unlikeable protagonists who find themselves right at the edge of their limits.

Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe ($34.99)

Living in a corrupt surveillance state, the people of New Found Haven are ruled over by a merciless Dictator. They are divided into rings of power and poverty, from the inner circle, ‘The Heart’, which is filled with the affluent masked elite, to the very outer ring, ‘The Boundary’, where life is short and brutal, food is scarce, and bloodshed is an inevitability. Greyson is the son of the President who rules over New Found Haven. He is also the ruthless Executioner who carries out all public ex*****ons of people who break the law. However, secretly Greyson is aiding the rebellion in any way he can. Shadera has grown up in The Boundary, and after the ex*****on of her parents, she becomes a ‘Daggermouth’, a for-hire assassin. Yet when her assassination attempt on Greyson fails, they are both forced into marriage together.

Daggermouth is a dark dystopian romance that explores power and community. It has been a while since I have read a dystopian novel, and I absolutely loved jumping back into the genre. Daggermouth looks at corruption, resistance and rebellion, all which felt to me very relevant to the current political climate across the world. Daggermouth is written in a multiple Point-of-View format. I enjoyed the large cast of characters, and discovering more about each person as the book went on had me loving each character even more. This is the first book in a duology, and I would recommend it for audiences 18+ due to the dark themes and explicit sexual content. It contains graphic depictions of domestic abuse which may be triggering for readers, so please be mindful of the warnings that can be found at the beginning of the book and online.

Cold River by Margaret Hickey ($34.99)

Detective Constable Sally White has just come back to the small town of Edenvale after her holidays, when she hears there has been a hiker missing on the near-by Mount Viking. Louis Taylor has been missing for two weeks, and the search has been called off. No-one thinks there is much hope for survival. While the police investigated, they found Louis had ambitions to be an extortionary journalist who would make headlines about the illegal to***co trade that is happening in the area.
As Sally went to interview the last person Louis talked to before his disappearance, she found him dead. Somebody didn’t want her to find out what he knew. Her leads are running dry; her peers are telling her to leave well enough alone. Sally can’t do that as she has also learnt that Astrid Marlowe, a young lawyer, has also vanished on the mountain two years before. So what do these two cases have in common? Did Astrid and Louis just go missing, or did they see something they shouldn’t have?
This is the first book of Margaret Hickey’s that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it; I couldn’t put it down. The suspense in the last half of the book was exhilarating, you didn’t know who was going to get out alive, or if all involved would pay for their awful crimes. I recommend if you see this book on the shelf pick it up and have a read.

Loops by Jashar Awan – $29.99

Learning new things is hard. Being a big kid? Even harder. It takes time to learn to be a big kid, and it all starts with one simple step. Big kid shoes. As it turns out, tying laces is harder than once thought. And so is being a big kid. Sometimes your shoelace comes untied, sometimes you swing just a little too high on the swing set, sometimes you don’t notice when you lose something really important… What would a big kid do?

Loops is a sweet story about the perks of growing up. Children can join the journey of a young boy learning to tie his shoes and follow the instructions on how to do it themselves. However, it doesn’t stop there! Loops goes on to talk about how you will often make mistakes, but that’s okay because practice makes perfect, and with a bit of hard work, you will get it. You’re still learning!
