A STACK OF ALPACAS by Matt Cosgrove ($18.99 – Hardcover)

This picture book is about an alpaca named Macca. In the book Macca’s nieces and nephew come for a visit. While on their visit we see the little alpacas only being troublesome and makings things hard for Macca. This book not only teaches kids to realise when they have upset someone but also teaches them how to apologise and make things right. The illustrations in the book have vibrant colours that keep the readers engaged but also keeps them entertained.
‘A Stack Of Alpacas’ is suitable for kindergarten and early primary school kids as they are learning how to read other people’s emotions and how to apologise when necessary.

Dark Heart by Neil Lancaster ($32.99)

When writer Dr Daniel Solomon is killed by a car bomb attack, the investigating officers are all certain it is an Islamic terror attack. But below the surface, there are dangerous undercurrents that have nothing to do with terror. More deaths and mounting pressure on the lead investigator, Ds Max Cragie, make it clear someone is leaking information.
Cragie thinks it is the terror element is hiding the true motives. Add in a hitman called the Cashier who is like a ghost that moves in the night. Always a step ahead! The only way they are going to stop all this killing is to go undercover and try to flush him out. Can Cragie unravel the truth before anyone else get killed?
I haven’t read any of this author’s other books in the Max Cragie series (Dark Heart is number 7), but I found it wasn’t necessary to enjoy this one. The author is an ex-detective, and his writing was easy to understand and this was an intense, thrilling read! I kept guessing who the leak was and was on the edge of my seat to see if the killer was caught the whole way through! If you like a good crime book, Dark Heart the book for you!

The Lost Daughter of Sparta by Felicia Day & illustrated by Rowan MacColl ($24.99 - paperback)

The last daughter of the Spartan king and queen was born cursed. A blood-red birthmark splashed across her face could only signify a curse from the gods. In truth all all of the sisters share a curse: Each will betray their husbands. Helen's choice caused a decades-long war. Clytemnestra murdered her husband Agamemnon in revenge for sacrificing their daughter to the gods. Timandra abandoned her husband for a king who would bring her power. And so, while her older sisters are at the centre of war and strife, Philonoe is raised in obsurity by goatherds. Until her parents need her to bring an alliance to fruition.
Determined to be the perfect daughter and wife, Philonoe is appalled when her mother warns her of the curse. She goes the the temple of Aphrodite and begs her to lift it. Aphrodite sets Philonoe three challenges to be met before her wedding only a few weeks hence. The challenges seem impossible, however Philonoe has also caught the attention of another god: Artemis, goddess of the hunt and of maidens.
As each challenge taxes not only Philonoe's physical strength, but also what she knows about following the dictates of parents who only think of their own political ends, and what it might really cost her to enter this marriage.

This graphic novel is artfully illustrated by Rowan MacColl, with excellent character definition and a stream-lined black, white and red pallette. The story builds on established mythology and presents it in an action-packed story the will definitely appeal to a Young Adult audience. There is sapphic romance here but I would happily recommend to 13+ readers, as there is no graphic sexual content however there is some violence; in line with the often violent nature of Greek mythology. Philonoe is a hero to cheer for and the end will have the reader holding their breath to see if she manges to break free from the expectations put on her.

The Rot by Evelyn Araluen ($24.99)

I am still thinking about how I feel about The Rot. As a body of work it felt, to me, more polished than Araluen's previous collection 'Dropbear'. It also felt both more intimate, and at the same time, more relatable.

There is rage here. It comes across in every line. It is rage at the world; the war in Gaza; the treatment of women; the treatment of Indigenous Australians. There is rage at historical and contemporary injustice. It makes uncomfortable reading. It is not meant for your comfort. It is meant to unsettle and challenge and question. It is also a work that rages at that feeling of helplessness we all feel as bystanders who, as average citizens, can not alter governmental policies no matter how much we protest or how we feel about the wars our nation chooses to partake in.

Compared to Dropbear (which had so many layers of literary comentary to unravel even I, a huge reader, found challenging), The Rot feels contemporary, immediate, and personal. It speaks to rage and grief that will hit women especially hard.
I find myself looking forward to see what Araluen's next collection bring (which was not something I thought after Dropbear, which I found too consciously literary for my taste).

The Rot has won THe Victorian Premier's Literary Award 2026, and is currently long listed for the 2026 Stella Prize - pictured here with the other Stella prize longlist nominees.

FROG: The Secret Diary of a Paramedic by Sally Gould ($36.99)

Sally Gould takes us into the messy, brutal, funny and strange world of paramedics in this candid memoir. From her first ride-along as a student medic to being the lead Intensive Care Paramedic after years of experience and training Sally opens herself to our scrutiny. She is honest about her reactions to tragic and violent scenes - from black humour to numbness to anger.

Sally is coming into the NSW ambulance service at a time of change: Many of the older members are highly experienced but not university qualified. Sally and other new members need a uni degree to sit in the ambulance. It is also still a mostly male dominated industry and while many male mentors are fine, others feel the need to keep a young woman in her place.
Sally's experiences make for easy (though at times gory) reading which may be upsetting for some people - there are mentions of su***de amd Sally herself experiences deep depression as the years pass and the novelty of her job wears off. There is frank talk of suicidal idolation and the long road to recovery.

This is a book aboutt he importance of balance and finding purpose, not just in work but in every other part of your life too.

GAME CHANGER ( #1 Game Changers / Heated Rivalry series) by Rachel Reid ($22.99)

Scott Hunter is the captain of The New York Admirals hockey team. He's a good-looking guy, tall, well built, and single.
He has game day rituals that he takes very seriously. Especially now that he's on a slump and hasn't scored a goal in a while. So when he gets a smoothie at a local juice bar and breaks his slump, he returns to the juice bar not sure if it was the smoothie that did the trick or the guy who made it, Kip Grady.
Kip is gay and proud of it. Scott is still in the closet and unsure if he can come out. There are no NHL players that are gay and out. Scott must decide if he wants to be the first outed gay player or will he loose Kip by keeping it a secret.

A full-on gay romance that leaves nothing to the imagination. This is the first book in a seven-book series, so far. If you like gay romance and sport you will love this.
