A REMARKABLE FUSION OF ART AND CRAFT // This is one of the comments made about Graeme Smith's stunning timber work featuring at Warwick Art Gallery until 22 August. With skills developed from his career as a boat builder, now retired, Graeme creates these incredible, one off designs that we are thrilled to showcase in his very first solo exhibition.
Grounded in a deep understanding of material and form, Smith designs and handcrafts each piece with precision and care. His practice reflects a lifetime of technical skill balanced by an intuitive response to timber’s natural character.
The exhibition, "Against the Grain", has been a resounding success for Graeme with the majority of the pieces going to new homes in Queensland and NSW. His work has also attracted a whole new audience to our Gallery.

We strongly urge a visit to the Gallery to see this exhibition before it closes. Open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays 9am to 12noon. Entry is FREE.

In 1920, a Namibian farmer named Jacobus Brits was plowing his field when his plow screeched to a sudden stop.

He'd hit something massive and unyielding just beneath the soil. It was the Hoba meteorite.

Weighing 60 tons, it remains the largest single piece of space rock ever found on our planet. What baffles scientists is the lack of a crater.

A rock that size should have left a monumental scar. But Hoba arrived around 80,000 years ago with such a shallow, flat trajectory that it essentially skipped across the atmosphere and belly-flopped onto the surface.

Its sheer size saved it from being hauled away. Early attempts to move it with heavy machinery failed.

It was declared a national monument in 1955 and left exactly where it landed. Today, you can visit it.

It sits in the same shallow pit, a permanent guest from the cosmos that no one could evict.
