The Welby Garden Centre stocks a large selection of roses, fruit trees, shrubs and seedlings. We support and provide meaningful employment to people living with disabilities. We have many loyal customers that frequent our centre and enjoy their member discount rewards from shopping with us. You too can feel good about shopping with us and supporting a worthy cause. Onsite we propagate and raise some of our own plants and also provide wholesale at great prices. Welby Garden Centre also offers dedicated gardening work teams to work in YOUR garden. 🌿 Bush Banter with Mitch 🌿
This month, Mitch is talking about one of Australia’s unsung heroes – Poa labillardieri (Common Tussock Grass).
It might not be the flashiest plant in the garden, but don’t let that fool you. This hardy native packs a serious punch.
🌾 It provides valuable habitat for small birds and lizards, with its dense foliage offering shelter, nesting material and seed for our feathered friends.
🌱 Its tough, fibrous root system makes it a champion for erosion control, helping to stabilise creek banks, slopes and topsoil.
❄️☀️ Built for Australian conditions, Poa is incredibly adaptable, tolerating everything from summer heat to winter frosts as low as -7°C (perfect for the highlands).
👌 Once established, it’s also wonderfully low maintenance, making it an easy choice for busy gardeners.
🏡 Whether you’re creating a naturalistic garden, planting a nature strip, adding texture to a rockery or filling a large landscape, Poa is as versatile as it is resilient.
💚 And here’s our favourite fact... every single Poa we currently have in stock has been grown from seed by our supported employees. Every plant represents not only a fantastic Australian native, but also the care, skill and dedication of our team.

Thank you to everyone who entered, shared our posts, stopped by our fundraising tables and supported this year’s Lucky Draw. Your generosity will help fund programs and equipment that create meaningful opportunities for local workers living with a disability.
We’re also incredibly grateful to our staff, volunteers and supported employees who helped promote the Lucky Draw throughout the campaign. From chatting with customers in-store to engaging with the community at our fundraising tables, your enthusiasm and teamwork played a huge part in making this initiative such a success.

Can you tell what you’re looking at?
This tiny leaf belongs to one of our young Pittosporum Silver Sheen seedlings.
It might seem small now, but every mature plant in a nursery begins with moments just like this.
We’re putting a growing focus on propagation - not because it’s the quickest path, but because it’s one of the most rewarding. Growing more of our own plants means building knowledge, resilience and a stronger future for our nursery.

🌿 A huge thank you to one of our incredible volunteers!
With a genuine passion for Australian native orchids, they carefully grew these beautiful Blunt Greenhood Orchids (Pterostylis) from bulbs before generously donating them for us to sell at Welby Garden Centre.
These remarkable native orchids are quite different to most flowering plants. They put on their spectacular display throughout winter, happily tolerate frost, then disappear completely over summer, surviving underground as tiny tubers until the cooler weather returns. It’s this unusual seasonal cycle that makes them such a special and sought-after addition to the garden.
They also have a fascinating partnership beneath the soil, growing alongside beneficial fungi that help them access important nutrients - a reminder that some of nature’s most incredible stories happen where we can’t even see them.
If you’re looking to add something truly unique to your collection, these are well worth a visit. Stock is limited, and every purchase helps us continue creating meaningful employment opportunities for people living with disability.

While the nursery might have looked a little quieter over winter, behind the scenes it’s been anything but.
Our production team has been hard at work sowing, propagating and nurturing thousands of plants, all getting ready for the season ahead. Every tray, every cutting and every seedling is a little promise of what’s to come.
Spring doesn’t just happen overnight - it starts months earlier, with plenty of care, patience and a whole lot of growing.
