LONG, BUT IMPORTANT POST THIS MORNING.
In Australia, we have already lost most of our local bank branches and rural and suburban post offices are next on the chopping block. It’s already happening.
Managers of Licensed Post Offices across Australia, decided to make a stand. We got busy writing to MPs, senators and local councillors. The response was incredibly supportive.
At Westbury, we had a personal visit from Labor senator Tammy Tyrell and we know the Meander Valley Council, especially councillors Anne-Maree Loader and Ben Dudman support keeping our local post offices open.
They are all in full agreement that we are far more than parcel collection points.
The amazing result is there will be a senate inquiry into the future of Australia’s Post Office network.
There are many issues that need to be addressed for a sustainable future for post offices, but at Westbury we feel the main points to be considered are:

Expanding the banking services post offices provide

Restoring lost and adding new services, so we can continue to support those who cannot or do not choose to do everything online.
One example is we can no longer take Housing Tasmania payments. Local services like this are essential for the vulnerable members of our community

Restoring our ability to make enquires on behalf of customers for lost or delayed parcels. Currently, we are left completely out of the loop when a case is opened and we are not even informed of the outcome. This is incredibly frustrating for customers and for us, as we are the ‘face’ and the point of contact.

Anyone can make a submission to the inquiry. If you would like to have your say, I have included the helpful guide of what to say and how to send it.
There will be printed copies of this information available at the post office.
Submissions can be as long or short as you like, but they do have to be in have to be in by 7th AUGUST 2026.
Thank you to our wonderful community for your support
