🌱♻️ WE’VE GOT AN IDEA… WHAT DO YOU THINK? ♻️🌱

We use a fair bit of Maxicrop Premium Seaweed + Fertiliser here at Van Tilburg Nursery, and we’ve been thinking…

What if we offered a REFILL SERVICE? 🤔

Instead of buying another plastic bottle every time, you could bring your own clean container into the nursery and we’ll refill it for you.

We’re thinking 500 mL for $13.

And here’s the good bit…

💧 500 mL makes up to 200 litres of plant food!

It’s a concentrated seaweed + fertiliser, so it’s not just a seaweed conditioner — you’re also giving your plants a feed.

🌱 Great for vegetables
🌸 Flowers
🌳 Trees & shrubs
🌿 Natives
🪴 Potted plants
🌾 Lawns & more

And most importantly…

WE USE IT. WE TRUST IT. 🌱

♻️ Reuse your old containers
♻️ Reduce plastic waste
🌱 Buy only what you need
💧 A little goes a long way

But before we actually set this up, we want to know what YOU think!

👉 Would you use a Maxicrop refill service?
👉 Would you bring your own bottle or container in?
👉 Is $13 for 500 mL a fair price?
👉 Is this something you’d find useful?

👇 Let us know in the comments — YES or NO, and tell us why!

If there’s enough interest, we’ll make it happen. 💚

🌱🌸 A LITTLE TASTE OF SPRING AT VAN TILBURG NURSERY 🌸🌱

There’s definitely something changing around the nursery at the moment.

The fruit trees are starting to flower, bulbs are popping up, the roses are budding, trees are beginning to leaf up — and the blue wrens are becoming a familiar sight again. 🐦

It feels like the garden is slowly waking up.

And with a few beautiful warm days already behind us, we’re starting to think that spring might be arriving a little earlier than usual.

🌱 The veggie patch is starting to wake up too.

We’ve got plenty of six-cell punnets coming along and ready for the garden, including:

🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Cauliflower
🥬 Cabbage
🫛 Peas
🫘 Beans
❤️ Beetroot

If you’ve been thinking about getting the veggie garden started, now is a great time to get things moving.

There’s no need to wait for the calendar to say spring. A little preparation now means you’re ready to make the most of the growing season ahead.

And behind the scenes, we’re busy propagating, potting and growing plenty more — watching closely to see what the season brings.

It’s always an exciting time of year around here.

The garden is waking up… and we’re looking forward to seeing what spring brings. 🌿

🌱 A LITTLE LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES AT VAN TILBURG NURSERY 🌱

This is 200 Dwarf Red Tea Trees we’ve potted up today. 🌿

And what’s pretty amazing is…

This is only a small part of what we’ve been working on today.

When you see rows of plants around the nursery, it’s easy to forget just how much work goes into getting them there.

Today alone we’ve been potting, propagating, watering, preparing stock and getting plants ready for the season ahead.

And the numbers really start to add up.

🪴 One box contains around 440 x 140 mm pots.

When we’re working through that many pots, you soon realise just how much plastic is used in a nursery.

That’s one of the reasons we really value reusing old nursery pots. ♻️

So when we ask if you’ve got old pots sitting around at home that you’re finished with…

We really do appreciate you bringing them in.

Every pot we can clean and reuse is one less pot that needs to be thrown away and another one that gets another life.

And then there’s the potting mix.

We make our own growing medium here at the nursery, and filling around 440 of these 140 mm pots uses close to a cubic metre of growing medium.

It’s amazing when you stop and think about it.

Hundreds of pots.
Hundreds of plants.
Hundreds of litres of growing medium.

And that’s just one small part of one day’s work.

🌱 This is what growing plants locally looks like.

A lot of work happens behind the scenes before a plant ever reaches your garden — and we’re pretty proud of the fact that we’re doing it right here in Westbury.

We’re getting plenty of stock growing now because spring is just around the corner, and judging by what we’re seeing around the nursery, it’s looking like it could be a cracker.

So keep an eye on what we’re up to.

There’s plenty more growing behind the scenes… 🌿🌸

And if you’ve got old nursery pots you’re no longer using, we’d love to give them another life. ♻️

🌼 UPDATE ON OUR EVERLASTINGS! 🌱

A little update from our last post — they’re up! 🙌

Our Everlasting seeds have germinated and we’re starting to see plenty of little seedlings popping through. 🌱🌱

It’s always exciting watching a tray go from a handful of seeds to hundreds of future plants. These little guys have a long way to go yet, but they’re off to a great start!

We’ll keep you updated as they grow, and eventually these will make their way into the nursery as some beautiful Tasmanian-grown Everlastings. 🌼

Not for sale yet — these are still in production.

🌸🌿 COLOUR FOR THE COOLER MONTHS! 🌿🌸

Looking for a bit of colour to brighten up the garden? Our Polyanthus, Pansies & Violas are looking absolutely fantastic right now! 😍

And at $5 each or 3 for $13, you can grab a few and really fill the garden with colour without breaking the bank.

🌼 Polyanthus — bright, cheerful flowers and great for adding winter and early spring colour.

🌸 Pansies & Violas — heaps of colours and combinations to choose from, with plenty already flowering beautifully.

These are the sort of plants that make you walk past the garden and think, “Yep, that looks bloody good.” 😄

And of course, they’re grown right here in Westbury.

We grow our plants right here where we experience some of Tasmania’s harshest conditions — so if they can handle Westbury, they’re ready for almost anywhere in Tasmania. 💪🌱

While you see the finished plants in the nursery, there’s a lot of hard work that happens behind the scenes. From propagation and potting up to watering, pruning, and preparing plants for sale, every day is different.

We’re proud to grow plants that are grown local, grown tough, and grown for Tasmania. 💚

🌼 BIG DREAMS. BIG GOALS. THOUSANDS OF FLOWERS. 🌼

Every great nursery starts with a dream.

Our dream is simple…

To grow some of the highest-quality plants in Tasmania and become a destination where gardeners know they’ll always find healthy, locally grown plants they can trust.

That journey continues today with one of our biggest spring projects yet.

🌸 6,000 Everlasting Daisies. 🌸

Not bought in.
Not imported.
Grown from seed, right here at Van Tilburg Nursery in Westbury.

Today we’ve sown our first 800 Everlasting Daisies, with another 800 going into trays tomorrow. From there, we’ll continue successive plantings until we’ve reached our ambitious goal of 6,000 plants.

Why so many?

Because we want to make sure there’s an incredible selection of fresh, colourful Everlasting Daisies available throughout the entire spring season—not just for a week, but for months.

Every seed represents a commitment to growing locally.
Every tray represents hours of work.
Every plant is another step towards building something bigger than ourselves.

🌺 But we’re not stopping there…

Last spring, two flowers stole the show.

Our Everlasting Daisies… and our Zinnias.

The response from our customers was incredible, so this year we’re raising the bar.

🌺 Our next big challenge is to grow between 4,000 and 8,000 Zinnias.

From giant blooms to cut-and-come-again varieties… brilliant reds, fiery oranges, sunshine yellows, soft creams, vibrant pinks, rich purples and everything in between.

We want benches overflowing with colour and choice, giving every gardener the opportunity to find the perfect Zinnia for their garden.

Our aim isn’t simply to grow more plants.

It’s to create one of Tasmania’s most colourful spring displays and give our amazing customers an unforgettable selection of locally grown flowers.

This project isn’t just about growing flowers.

It’s about proving what passion, determination and hard work can achieve.

It’s about supporting local growers.

It’s about giving Tasmanians access to beautiful plants that have been grown in Tasmanian conditions, for Tasmanian gardens.

And it’s about building a nursery that our community can be proud of.

🌱 Our Progress So Far
✅ 800 Everlasting Daisies sown today
🌱 Another 800 Everlasting Daisies being sown tomorrow
🎯 Goal: 6,000 Everlasting Daisies

🌺 Next Goal
🎯 4,000–8,000 colourful Zinnias for an unforgettable spring display.

Over the coming weeks and months we’ll share every stage of the journey—from freshly sown trays… to the first tiny seedlings… to benches overflowing with colour… and finally thousands upon thousands of flowers ready to head home with gardeners all across Tasmania.

We hope you’ll follow along as we chase these ambitious goals.

Because this is about far more than growing flowers.

It’s about creating something truly special for our community.

It’s about inspiring people to get outside, grow something beautiful, and fill their gardens with life and colour.

We’re growing the future of Van Tilburg Nursery—one seed at a time.

🌼🌺 Grown Local • Grown Tough • Grown for Tasmania • Growing Our Future.
