Bec’s Unhinged Observations:
Driving With Trucks 🚛
As a truck driver’s daughter, pictured here on the left with my little Dolly and what can only be described as peak 90s fashion, I feel like I’ve got some authority to issue a gentle public service announcement.
STOP DIVING INTO THE FU***NG GAP IN FRONT OF TRUCKS.
That space isn’t there because old mate forgot to catch up. It’s not a VIP merging lane personally reserved for your Mazda 3. It’s his safe braking distance.
The amount of times I’m on the Monash and watch someone see a B-double leave a sensible gap and think, beauty, that’s got my name written all over it, before squeezing into it like they’re playing Tetris at 100km/h.
Mate. A fully loaded truck doesn’t stop like your Corolla. Old mate can’t just slam the anchors on and hope for the best. There’s 60 tonnes of “you’re about to seriously regret that decision” sitting behind you.
I spent half my childhood in trucks with my old man. Interstate, local, wherever the wheels were going, I was going too. Back when the official truckie uniform appeared to be a blue Bonds singlet, footy shorts, thongs and one extremely tanned arm permanently hanging out the window.
Truckie etiquette was basically another language.
Someone overtaking you at night? Flash the headlights.
Daytime, you’d hear, “Bring it in, mate” over the CB when there was enough room to get the big bastard back over.
Then came the little left-right-left indicator thank you.
I STILL DO THAT.
Every single time a truck lets me in, my indicators are going left-right-left like I’ve just personally been escorted through customs. Half the younger truckies probably think, what the f**k is this woman doing? But it’s so deeply ingrained in me I physically cannot stop.
And yeah, there are di****ad truck drivers. Of course there are. There are di****ads in every profession. But there are also truckies out there who have driven millions of kilometres, know roads better than Google Maps, can reverse a B-double into a space I couldn’t confidently park a shopping trolley in and have forgotten more about driving than most of us will ever know.
So here are Bec’s very simple rules for not being a di****ad around trucks:
Don’t pinch their braking distance.
Don’t sit in their blind spot.
If they’re indicating, understand they might actually need some room.
Don’t cut in front of 60 tonnes and immediately hit the brakes because you’ve just spotted your exit.
For the love of Christ, if a truck is turning a corner or going around a roundabout, do not try to sneak up the inside of it. You’re not spotting a clever little shortcut, you’re volunteering to become part of the trailer.
So if a truckie does you a solid, give them the little indicator thank you. Keep the ancient traditions alive.
Because while you’re trying to get home ten seconds quicker, that bloke or woman up there is just trying to make a living, deliver half the s**t we all rely on and get home to their family.
Give the big bastards some room. 🚛
