“Duplex scale patent”

First Steinway’s *”duplex scaling” patented in
1872, Blüthner’s “aliquot patent” in the following year in
1873.
While both patents incorporated unstruck strings as harmonic sympathisers, Steinway does not have a fourth string but uses the non speaking parts behind the capo d’astro bar, and the metallic strip or (aliquots) in front of the hitch pins. Both are factory tuned exactly an octave or 5th of the speaking length of the string. Unfortunately Blüthner were notorious for getting their patents late to be registered at the patent office.
With Steinway’s aggressive marketing,
we’ll never know…….?.

*The duplex scaling invariably adds to Steinway’s clear bell like tone. Increasing the sound and overall sustain of each note in the lower and upper treble section.
