- Minutes numbered 0-30 clockwise on the PAST side
- Minutes numbered 0-30 anticlockwise on the TO side
- Minute (big) and Hour (small) hands that are easy to tell apart
- PAST and TO clearly written on the clock face
- Geared
- Large
- Simple, uncomplicated clock face, with large clear print in high contrast black and white (to avoid visually demanding colour combinations)
Teach the 3 steps to telling the time with a clock (as per above) and you’ll find teaching the time so much easier, quicker and successful.

Temptation + curiosity + favourite old squishy = got the better of us.
I’d brought a new one from Starfish to replace the old one (quite a few of my students like plucking the “fur”) as it was looking worse for wear.
Smoosho are a quality brand, non-toxic - but of course, we were very careful and cleaned up straight away.
Whilst the heavy work, firm resistance ones are popular when students first arrive to their tutoring sessions, almost always they will end up with the much squishier Smoosho Furry Colour change squishy in their hand while they’re actually doing their tutoring tasks.

This is our new Geared Teaching Clock. And it’s ours, taken soooo long to find a manufacturer to do it the way we want/need to make it perfect for beginners learning to tell the time.
It’s all about the minutes on the TO side (plus a few other important features) that make it the best teaching clock in the world. Big call. Truth bomb. I said what I said.

So many people never learn to tell the time and it doesn’t need to be that way.
It’s actually so easy IF you:
- Follow the three steps
- Use the right teaching clock.

2. Where is it (o clock, half past, on the past or to side)
3. Where do you start counting from (the top)

🙌🏽 hands down the BEST teaching clock for beginners.
How can I make such a big call?

It ticks every single box that I need when teaching my students to tell the time:
⏰ minutes are numbered 0 to 30 clockwise (on the PAST side of the clock)
❗️CRUCIALLY ❗️
⏰ minutes are numbered 0 to 30 ANTI clockwise (on the TO side of the clock)
⏰ the clock is GEARED - the hour hand moves as the minute hand is turned
⏰ the clock face is CLEAR & UNCOMPLICATED it’s easy and straight forward to look at, which reduces the “overwhelm” that is experienced by most students first learning to tell the time
⏰ the minute hand is significantly larger and different to the hour hand, making it easy to distinguish the two
⏰ the hands are easy to move by the dial on the back, or by turning the hands from the front
⏰ PAST and TO are clearly marked
⏰ it’s an optimal size for teaching
⏰ it does have a “seconds” hand that can be added if needed (but I don’t use it)
⏰ it also has a stand that can be used (but I don’t generally use it).
