It's been great to have time off over Winter, but it's time to pull the 'preverbial finger out' and get down and dirty in the garden. There are plenty of seeds to sow and others to prick out, and the sales area stocked. The nursery will re-open from tomorrow, while you can also see me weekly at the Adelaide Hills Farmers market on Saturdays.
Hope your veggie gardens are producing well, but time to prepare for the next season!

The remnants of my self sown raddichio look more like a rose, nearly too good to eat!.
The garden is looking very wet this morning, not from rain, just a heavy dew from the cold overnight temperatues. It's making the nettles keep growing and germinating, so more work to do, Back to the greenhouse to check out the chillis today and finish pricking out the tomatoes....

A bit of time in the nursery this morning, with the first of the tomatoes needing to be pricked out, plus a couple of Moringa seedlings also requiring bigger pots. Dwarf snow peas, corianer, wild rocket and Rue seeds sown, beetroot and basil next.
A wonderful 50mls of rain sees some topup into the tanks.

Waiting for harder to germinate seeds to actually germinate can test ones patiance. Will they or won't they! But hey presto , up they pop. Plenty of winter chill followed by a few warmer days sees the first of the Angelica pubescens ( Du Huo) and A. dahurica (Bai Zhi) seeds coming through. Sown on the surface, Angelica seed needs to be fresh to get good germination. Only A. sinensis to come.
Du Huo is a herbaceous perennial while Bai Zhi is a bi-annual.
Looling forward to having these later in the year for sale.
Currently have quality Angelica archangelica available in 5" pots ready for planting

The Spring-like sunshine today is leading to a wet and cold weekend, however some herbs and veggies are definately on the move!
Some edibles are still in limited stock atm, however there are lemon or pizza thymes, greek oregano and sweet marjoram.
Angelica is looking lush, and Babington leeks are growing quickly. Potted Gooseberries 'roaring lion' and Rhubarb are ready now plus a few edible flowers.
Many others should be ready for planting in a couple of weeks just in time for the nursery re-opening. August 19th.

Lots of herbs and veggies suitable for water gardens, aquaponic systems or wet, boggy spots in the garden. The Kang kong spinach germinated quickly after a warm 24hr overnight soak. You will also find Water Pepper, Lebanese cress, and Water Chestnuts available from Spring.
Brahmi can also be a good addition in these situations.
Will the nursery is still closed for a few more weeks, you can find me back at the Adelaide Hills Farmers market on Saturdays.

After 4 attempts, finally managed to prise some Butchers Broom ( Ruscus aculeatus) from its garden bed.
Ruscus is an interesting subshrub with medicinal and culinary uses. It is an aromatic, diuretic, mildly laxitive herb that reduces inflammation, increases perspiration and consticts the veins. Native to Europe, N. Africa, N. Turkey and the Azores the flat shoots know as cladodes give the appearance of stiff spine-tipped leaves. A tough herb that does will in dry shade, with both male and female forms, females produce red berries after flowering.
Plants available from late Spring.

Seeds are popping up fast, the space on the heat mat is at a premium!! The first of the tomatoes are up and can be moved to the other greenhouse before they draw up too fast. They can get leggy very quickly if left on the heat and this applies to many seeds. The toothache plant however will need extra time to develop good growth before being pricked out.
A 24hr soak sees the Moringa going onto the heat mat while Asparagus has also had the same treatment but will just go into the warm greenhouse.. Still to do is Kang Kong and Henna.
Will start Basil soon too when there's space in the warm greenhouse.
