🌸 A little experiment is about to become a proper project…

This year I’m putting aside space on the farm for a spot of dahlia breeding.

While I’m down the beach for a couple of days with my daughter and one of her friends I’ve been reading up and planning…

I’ve got a couple of seedlings growing already, and this year I’m hoping to raise around 120 more.

The exciting (and slightly terrifying) thing about growing dahlias from seed is that you really don’t know what you’re going to get. Every seedling is different.

There could be something truly special hiding in amongst those 120… or there could be a whole lot of meh. 😂

Either way, I’m going to document the experiment - the successes, the duds and hopefully a few future favourites.

Okay, I’m going to say something that might be slightly controversial in the dahlia world…

You don’t actually need a garden full of rare, hard-to-find, everyone-is-fighting-over-them dahlias. 😉

In fact, if your goal is LOTS of beautiful cut flowers, strong plants and plenty of tubers to grow again next year, I’d take a garden full of tried-and-true performers every time.

So I’ve put together a little pack of five of my absolute reliable favourite cut flowers:
