Queen Vic Afterglow is all divided and in storage ahead of my next tuber sale as of today πŸ™Œ

I honestly cannot wait to see this babe out in the world, she is such a fantastic and cheerful bloom and I am so in love with her colour and glow.

Have you already ordered her in my early sale, or are you hoping to grab her in my next? I think she's going to go fast, especially since I have less stock than predicted due to the desert like conditions we experienced last summer!

I spent the weekend digging up Queen Vic Victoria to save her from my soil becoming waterlogged.

It's the strangest thing, just 2 rows in my field are waterlogged, and they're not at the lowest point - they're right in the middle! After much procrastination over how to progress I started digging tuber clumps, and washing them in the field in the rain. I typically don't like to wash - it makes dividing a whole lot easier but it's so cold here in winter that I find they don't store as well.

However, I do think these will go ok due to my new dig, divide and store within the space of a few days. Minimising time out of the ground / storage media has been key forgetting my dahlia tubers to store well in my climate. I've already finished dividing the freshly washed clumps and she'll be ready to store by Wednesday :)

Has the weather meant you've needed to change tracks on how you normally store your tubers over winter?

Say it with me - every garden needs a gorgeous white dahlia 🀍

Queen Vic Vanilla throws out masses of blooms, has lovely bright green strong stems, a great head angle and his back petals are bigger than the front which is super cute! It reminds me of butterfly wings πŸ¦‹

QV Vanilla is available later this year as a new release Dahlia cultivar in Australia. Jump on the website to check him out, or comment "waitlist" to sign up for tuber sale notifications ☺️

An arrangement with QV Dirty Martini from the end of dahlia season.

His huge show-off blooms mean you don't need many in a vase for him to stand out, he's perfect for a pared back country cottage vibe, or a moody late autumn arrangement.

He doesn't have the longest vase life of any dahlia I grow - which is typical of dinner plate dahlias in my experience; but when harvested at the right time for events, or for when you want to show off your mad skills and impress your friends with his massive size, he's there for it!

Who else loves a dinner plate size bloom? πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

There are some flowers that you feel a special affinity with. Every time you look at them, they just make everything better. A little easier in hard times, more joyous in the good.

Queen Vic Heartbreaker is all of that to me. He's the one I visit first in the garden, he's the one that I try to put in every bouquet, every arrangement. He's always in my home in a vase and close by all flower season long. He's the one that makes me think about how much I love my family; my son, my husband. He feels like he is my family!

I really hope that if you grow him, he makes you feel this way too.

How has the first week of winter been treating you? This week so far we've had 90mm of rain; which has slowed down digging, but I'm hoping it will help set me up for next season; because our dam is has been pretty low and I think it might be just a touch more full.

I spent most of this week dividing tubers for QV Heartbreaker, and they are looking pretty great, which makes me happy 😍

I know I say this a lot but Heartbreaker really has it all! πŸ™Œ

He's got that perfect salmon pink colouring that fades off really nicely, strong stems, excellent head attachment, and repeat blooms over a long blooming window. He really is just so great and I am SO excited to share him with you all in the spring :)

I also finished shipping all the dahlia seed orders this week thank you again to everyone who ordered, I can't wait to see what you grow 🌱

Over the long weekend I'm planning on hanging at home and digging up more dahlias; what are you getting up to? The dahlia digging grind or something more fun and less dirty?

Five years ago today we settled on our house in Woodend.

I'd convinced my husband that starting a flower farm was a great idea; and while it took a lot of convincing, he's always had my back when it comes to my crazy ideas, and eventually I wore him down 🀣

The first year was a crazy whirlwind and I threw myself into it. I had no idea how to run a business; I just knew I liked growing things. And dahlias.

Collecting seed that first season I had so much excitement and hope for the future, but also fear - you never know what you'll get growing from seed. They could have all been crap!

Lucky for me a few turned out okay.

From 240 seedlings in year two, to 8 seedlings in year 5 of my farming journey.

Queen Vic Dahlias has been five years in the making, born before I really understood what I was getting myself into, and now one of my proudest achievements.

If you're in Australia and want to be one of the first to grow my new Queen Vic cultivars and gain advance access to my Dahlia tuber sales; comment "waitlist" and I'll DM you the link to sign up. For my international friends, hit that follow button and note that I don't ship overseas :)

Thanks for being part of my story 🌸
