I was watching Practical Magic the other night (an all-time favourite of mine) in anticipation of the sequel and inadvertently found myself creating this studio that seems to be at least somewhat inspired by that aesthetic. It feels a little bit magic and I'm feeling a whole lotta creative.

I'm clinging to tiny glimpses of spring on these grey 'feels like top of 5', 'feels like top of 7' days in Yackandandah. I've never been a big winter person, but I know it's a necessary predecessor to the season of beauty and bounty.

My work days have been occupied by propagating plugs for other cut flower growers, as well as fertilising my spring crops, stripping diseased leaves from ranunculus, netting anemones from female bowerbirds, trying to succeed in growing a single sweet pea against an onslaught of slugs and other misadventures. The season feels late this year. There aren't many buds on the ranunculus though they look very healthy. I'm hoping the serious heat doesn't come on early or it may not be a very successful ranunc season. Time will tell! Such is flower farming.

Solstice-ish bouquet challenge. It's unusual to have roses and daffodils in late June.

Forget-me-nots and Japanese anemones naturalising under this Malus ioensis 'Plena', with an oakleaf hydrangea and its gorgeous burgundy foliage hanging on through this very warm June.

The solstice is next week, I have daffodils blooming and it's 17C today with a touch of sun amidst lots of rain lately. The birds and I are soaking it up.

Strawflowers are one of my most profitable crops - not a stem goes to waste, as I dry everything I can't use fresh.

These are the 'King' series (read: massive flowers) and it's all I'll grow from now on. This handful was grown by my friend Alice from seedlings I propagated for her.

If you want to be like Alice, order your strawflower plugs now! I'm propagating a red and yellow mix this week. 121 cell trays are $121/tray, ready in approx. 8 weeks. I can also do a pink/white mix (also King size).

You could even share a tray with a friend. They're great for micro growers and backyard gardeners, whether you're selling fresh wholesale or in bouquets, or dried in wreaths or for other art & craft pursuits.
