The Sun Bookshop

The Sun Bookshop The Sun Bookshop and its specialist children's store The Younger Sun are your favourite bookstores in the West. Even if you don't know it yet...

Tucked into a corner of the glorious Sun Theatre in Yarraville, we love the Sun Bookshop. It's a comfortable place, where you can browse books, chat to people who love books, and find something that'll have you up until 2am saying "just one more chapter..." This is not your big conglomerate global store, it's a little local business that really cares about what they sell and what they do. It's not just about books, it's about the stories.

Kat read and loved BEGGINING MIDDLE END by Valeria Luiselli

A woman and her daughter head to Sicily in the wake of the disintegration of her marriage. In Sicily, she stays with a new lover, while witnessing a summer of volcanic expulsions, storms and rapidly changing environments, and a mercurial affection of her new friends. Throughout their journey they carry with them a mosaic stolen from an archeologicall dig long ago, which her daughter becomes determined to return.

A beautiful book that examines departures arrivals, and how to make a home in a strange and changing world, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, the stories we tell ourselves, how we are shaped by and make sense of things through them

A favourite read of the year so far from kat - come down and get a copy today,

Kat recommends SEA, POSION by Caren Beilin.

A Strange and funny account of a maybe unnecessary medical procedure, a failed relationship and a city of hospitals.

Cumin Baleen is a forty-one-year-old writer living in Philadelphia – a city of hospitals – who works at the upscale market Sea & Poison, and is navigating the onset of an autoimmune condition. To start a course of medicine that might help, an eye exam is required, which leads to a nightmarish laser eye surgery. The laser shoots into her brain, making her language spare and her sentences clause-less, a vexing constraint that stalls her book on gynecological malpractice: she wants others, in the realm of this for-profit medical industry, to see poison.

We've got copies of David Sedaris' THE LAND AND ITS PEOPLE in and he is as funny as ever.

IN The Land and Its People, David Sedaris reflects on what it means to be a foreigner, a brother, a lifelong friend. He tries on the role of carer after his boyfriend Hugh's hip-replacement surgery, and both succeeds and fails. He buys his sister a cape and discusses his brother with a jaded Duolingo bot.

We love visits and signed copies of THE RUINERS and visits from the very chic Ellena Savage. Spikey, fun, smart, full of conspiring lobsters and the rot of lost bohemias. Read it

Kat just read CAPTURE by Amanda Lohrey and loved it.

James Mather, a psychiatrist in his sixties is convinced to see clients to see clients who claim have all experienced encounters with alien abduction. Attempting to make sense of the data and the while navigating doubt, truth and trauma of his own body and those of his clients. Beautifully written.
