The impact of SAPOL’s permit processing delays are having on business has now been publicly acknowledged in this article from The Advertiser. This coverage is a direct result of our continued advocacy on behalf of South Australian fi****ms businesses. However, we must correct the record. In the article, it was claimed that permits “must not” be granted within 28 days. This is not accurate.

The intention of the 28-day period mentioned is directed at those who haven’t owned a firearm before, with section 10 stating that a permit may be granted before 28 days; when, 10 (a) the applicant is the owner of a registered firearm of the same category as the firearm to which the application relates.

Using this as an excuse for the delay is not acceptable and is contradictory as permits were being processed in two weeks as recently as November 2024. Further to this, it is disappointing that SAPOL have not provided the public an explanation for what is causing these delays.

SIFA will continue to set the record straight and keep pushing for SAPOL to urgently address this issue.
