World Record Barra Tackle

This could be one of the rarest lures in Australia now. An all timber Bill’s bug circa 1990 custom made for myself and my brother, one each, by Bill Clarke. About 15 years before I caught my first Barra. I won’t ever use this lure again, but will frame it in the near future.

On this day in 2011, Mark Hope set the IGFA Men’s 1-kg (2 lb) Line Class World Record with this incredible 23.7-kilogram (52-pound, 3-ounce) barramundi. Mark was no stranger to barramundi records and after breaking the 80 lb line class record three times, he wanted to go back and prove himself as an angler with light line records. For 6 months he fished exclusively with 1 kg (2 lb) line and only caught one fish. After becoming frustrated with losing many fish, Mark went back up 4 kg (8 lb) line and set all the records working his way back down to the 2 lb line class. On September 21, 2011, Mark was trolling a 6” z-man swimmer behind his kayak in Lake Tinaroo, Australia 🇦🇺, when the fish of a lifetime hit. The massive barramundi jumped twenty times in the twenty minute fight before he was finally able to land it. He speculates that the unusual amount of jumps tired the fish out so he was able to land it much quicker than previous fish he had caught. To this day, Mark still holds six of the ten IGFA Men’s Line Class World Records for barramundi 🏆.
