One of the main reasons the US says it wants regime change in Iran is because of women’s rights. Yet the historical record tells a different story. The leader the US backed for nearly four decades, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran, had an abysmal record on women’s rights and said outrageously misogynistic things, like in this clip where he dismissed women’s intellectual capabilities outright, claiming they had not produced “top scientists” and refusing even to say whether his own wife was an exception. That was the US-backed monarch often framed as modern and progressive. Today, his son is the man Israel, the US and their allies talk about putting into power for a “better democratic and free” Iran, although recently Donald Trump seemed to drop that idea when he admitted he is not popular in Iran.
