On the authority of Abdullah RA, the son of Umar ibn al-Khattab RA, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, "Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the salah (prayer), paying the zakat (obligatory charity), making the hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadhan." Narrated Abu Huraira RA: I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds."
