Un masque maléfique ? LIÈGE Les trois propriétaires précédents du masque s'étaient pendus. L'homme, très inquiet car hanté toutes les nuits, lui aussi, par ce masque, était venu trouver, aux abois, Paul-Pierre Gossiaux, professeur d'anthropologie culturelle et d'ethnologie de l'Afrique centrale à l'Université de Liège.
En 1985, le Pr Gossiaux avait été invité à un débat de l'Ecran Témoin sur la RTBF. A la suite de cette émission, j'ai reçu plus de 300 lettres de personnes me demandant conseil, se souvient le professeur. Dont ce monsieur habitant Liège. Il m'a raconté avoir hérité d'un masque africain ramené d'Afrique centrale par un vieil oncle. Selon ce dernier, le masque avait été rendu magique suite à un sacrifice humain. A ma connaissance, une seule ethnie pratiquait de tels sacrifices, au Congo très exactement. Ce masque provenait justement de cette ethnie. Le masque, censé habité par l'esprit du sacrifié, hantait la maison et les rêves de son possesseur. Mais comme il avait une certaine valeur, l'oncle préféra l'enterrer à la cave plutôt que de le vendre. Mal lui en prit. Il se suicida. Deux personnes qui en héritèrent se pendirent aussi. Le nouveau propriétaire demanda conseil au Pr Gossiaux pour le désenvoûter, ne voulant pas s'en séparer et transmettre la malédiction. Je lui ai conseillé de ne rien faire du tout, un masque ne pouvait avoir de pareils pouvoirs. Je l'ai rassuré et ne l'ai plus jamais vu. Cela avait dû marcher. A moins que l'homme ne se soit pendu à son tour...
