The story of Adolphe Sax seemed to have ended when his son Edouard Sax sold the almost bankrupt company end 1920'...until a Belgian decided to revive the worlds' first saxophone brand in 2012

180 years ago today, on June 28th 1846, Adolphe Sax received the patent for the saxophone. 💪 He had already developed and presented his revolutionary instrument in Brussels 🇧🇪 in 1841, but securing the patent took several more years.

That patent mattered. It was not just a legal document - it was recognition of invention, protection of creative work, and a crucial step in giving a new instrument its place in the world.

Yet even with his patents in place, Sax’s opponents continued to challenge and pursue him through lengthy legal battles. They tried to wear him down - but in the end, he won every case.

His story reminds us that innovation is rarely only about having the idea. It is also about defending it, protecting it, and persevering when others resist change.
From one inventor’s vision to a global musical voice: the saxophone still proves the power of creativity, craftsmanship and intellectual property.

It's kind of cool to end up in a TV program you've watched yourself for years 😊

A while ago, Michael Portillo and the crew of *Great Continental Railway Journeys* visited Bruges together with NMBS. The episode was broadcast yesterday on BBC Two.

A special highlight was seeing Johan Vandendriessche being interviewed while playing a Sax4Pax tenor saxophone.

On February 7th, we remember the anniversary of 🇧🇪 Adolphe Sax his death - inventor of the saxophone, musical rebel, and officially one of the most indestructible humans in history.

As a child he almost drowned.
He fell down the stairs and cracked his skull.
Spent nine days in a coma from measles.
Accidentally drank vitriol, thinking it was milk.
His workshop was set on fire.
He survived several murder attempts.
Went bankrupt three times.
And even beat cancer.

In short: Adolphe Sax wasn’t just a musical genius - he was a genuine, certified badass.
And yet… even he had to die.
On February 7, 1894, the man who survived everything finally put down his saxophone.

Thankfully, his invention lives on every single day 🎷💪

November 11th – Armistice Day* 🕊️

A few years ago, inspired by Isaiah’s peace prophecy, I (Karel) began a project to create saxophones from recycled WWI and WWII artillery shells 💣. With the help of many 🧑🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏻, we gathered over 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs) of three artillery shells. British, German, American, and even Russian shells were melted together, forming a new, purified brass alloy - the foundation for our Sax4Pax 🎷 saxophones.

The “war to end all wars” didn’t end all wars… but if objects of destruction can become instruments of hope, then so can we.

The man. The legend. Adolphe Sax — born November 6th, 1814 👶🎷 Yet time-traveling, saxophone-hating aliens👽 tried to stop him:

As a child he survived so many brushes with death ⚠️🔥💀
that his own mother said he wouldn’t reach the age of 12.
They failed ✊ In 1841 (Brussels) 🇧🇪 the saxophone 🎷was revealed to the world!

BUT...the TTSH-aliens 👽 held a grudge and more trials followed: theft - sabotage - arson - lawsuits - cancer - even attempts to kill him - etc...

Yet the boy who was “never supposed to live” died of old age.
