RIP GRUUN 2018-2025 💚

Things are suddenly moving very fast, and I have to announce that this Sunday at 17:00, GRUUN will permanently close its doors.
It’s been an incredibly tough year for so many small businesses. I have tried to keep going as long as possible, but competing with bigger players and especially the rise of certain pop-up concepts in the city centre has made it impossible to survive.

✨ So EVERYTHING is for sale except the walls, doors & floors
📉 All items -50%
🚲 No more bike deliveries
💻 Webshop stays open until Monday at midnight – small items (books, etc.) can still be shipped across the EU by Bpost. Final shipments go out Tuesday.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported GRUUN, especially my regulars who stuck around, some from the very beginning and others who I’ve met in last 1,5 year. You have no idea how much I appreciate you. ❤️

If you can, please share this post. Let’s give GRUUN a proper send-off. 💚

🌿 IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Pteris straminea

Meet Pteris straminea, aka Pteris dentata, a graceful fern with its finely divided fronds and lush, arching growth habit.

🤓Etymology: Pteris comes from the Greek word pteron (πτερόν), meaning "feather" or "wing." Straminea is derived from the Latin word stramineus, meaning "straw-like" or "pale yellow," referring to the straw-colored midribs of the fronds.

🌐 Origin and Habitat: Most online sources claim it’s native to Southeast Asia, which seems to be incorrect. According to POWO, its native distribution ranges from the Arabian Peninsula along East Africa to South Africa. It is often found growing near streams or riverbanks, which tells us this is a very thirsty plant.

🍃 Foliage Characteristics: This fern is celebrated for its delicate, lace-like fronds that feature a soft, light green hue with subtle pale yellow midribs. The feathery appearance of its foliage adds a touch of softness and movement, making it perfect for hanging baskets, tabletops, or large terrariums.

🌱 Cultivation Requirements:
* Bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate shade.
* Consistently moist but never soggy soil.
* Higher humidity levels.

🤔 Taxonomic Placement: Pteris straminea belongs to the Pteridaceae family, which includes a wide variety of ferns like maidenhair ferns and heart leaf ferns.

If you’re looking for a vibrant-colored plant with a soft texture and aren’t afraid of some higher maintenance, Pteris straminea is an excellent choice! 🌿✨

Why Plants Can't Dehumidify Air Effectively 🌿💨

The internet loves to claim that certain houseplants can magically absorb moisture from the air—but guess what? It’s WRONG!

💦Here’s why:
* Moisture Uptake:Plants absorb water through their roots, not the air. Any water v***r absorbed through leaves is negligible compared to overall humidity.
* Transpiration:Remember your biology classes, the byproducts of photosynthesis are oxygen and water -that gets released as v***r into the air, increasing indoor humidity.

🌿Are There Exceptions?
* Carnivorous Plants like Venus flytraps can collect surface moisture (e.g., dew) but don’t reduce air humidity.
* Epiphytic Plants like air plants use trichomes (tiny hair-like structures) to capture moisture, but their impact is minimal.

🤓Example: A 100m² apartment with a 250cm ceiling has a volume of 2,500,000,000 cm³, while a 7cm air plant has a volume of roughly 200 cm³. Even a bunch of air plants wouldn’t make a dent! Of course the air is mostly a mix of gasses and the percentage of water in the air only ranges from 0-4% but 4% of 2,5 billion is still a lot compared to the plant

✅ What Actually Works?
* Use a dehumidifier—efficient and reliable!
* Improve ventilation with fans or open windows.
* Add absorbent materials like silica gel or rock salt for small spaces.

💡 Bottom line: Don’t buy a Boston fern to dehumidify your bathroom—buy it because it’s beautiful or to support your local plant shop 😉

New Local Handmade Brand in Store! 🌱

We’re excited to collaborate with Oyas®, a local brand that creates beautiful, handcrafted clay watering pots and our newest partner.

These natural, handmade clay watering pots are the perfect solution for plant parents who tend to forget to water their plants or travel frequently. Just fill the reservoir, and the pot takes care of the rest!💦

This ancient irrigation method is believed to be thousands of years old and was invented independently by different cultures. By bringing the water straight to the roots, you conserve water because there is less surface evapotranspiration. Proving once again that sometimes, you shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken! Oyas® has brought this ancient method into the modern era, adapting it for houseplants with a variety of stunning glazed finishes.
We’re proud to offer their smallest pots in 10 beautiful colors, but for the gardeners among us, be sure to explore their full range of garden irrigation solutions as well.🌈

Each piece is carefully handmade in their Brussels workshop, making them an excellent gift idea or a practical solution for your watering needs.🎁

Available in-store and on our webshop (EU shipping).

🌱 Don’t Cut Off Those Dying Leaves Just Yet! 🍂

Don’t believe everything you see on TikTok. I’ve seen many videos about cutting of your old leaves because they allegedly ‘take energy from the plant’ Well, WRONG!

While old or dying leaves may seem unsightly, they play a critical role in your plant's health. As these leaves age, they act as a nutrient reserve, breaking down and transferring valuable resources like nitrogen and chlorophyll back to the plant. 🌿

By removing them prematurely, you could disrupt this natural recycling process, weakening the plant over time. So, let them dry up and fall off naturally—after +400 million years of evolution, your plant knows what it’s doing! 🌞

* If a leaf is heavily infested with bugs or fungus, it's best to remove it. This helps prevent the infestation from spreading to other parts of the plant.

🌵 Cactus Care Tip! 🌵

Time to give your cacti a little rest! Stop watering now and let them snooze until spring 🌞

During winter, cacti go dormant—they slow down and need much less water. Overwatering now can lead to leggy growth, root rot or fungal problems. Plus, keeping them dry mimics their natural desert winters, setting them up to thrive and bloom beautifully later. 🌸💚
