For Sale - SMLE Gr***de Discharger No. 1 Mk. 1
In August 1917 the No. 23 Mills gr***de was modified to be able to have a plate screwed into its base plug. With the addition of the plate the gr***de had its designation changed to the No. 36 Mk 1. A new type of Gr***de Discharger was also introduced, the No. 1 Mk 1, to be used together with the No. 36 Mills Gr***de. These remained in service until June 1921.
Prior to the introduction of the Gr***de Discharger No. 1 Mk 1 the No. 23 was used with a rod screwed into the base plug. There were two different lengths of rod for different distances, the shorter rod giving a maximum range of 95 yards. The problem with using a longer rod was that it increased the pressure, risking blowing up the rifle and the rods were very destructive to the rifling. The new design could propel the No. 36 gr***de between 80 and 200 yards by adjusting the gas port, importantly without incurring any damage to the rifle. Post WW1 rifles used only for gr***de discharging often had the fore-wood bound with copper wire. All rifle gr***des in British service used blank cartridges, these were sometimes made in the field by removing the bullet from a live cartridge and sealing the opening with candle wax.
The Gr***de was always fired at a 45 degree angle with the heel of the butt into the ground. The recoil was said to be 3 times that of a normal cartridge.
Both the No. 23 and No. 36 Gr***des could be used without the rod or base plate as normal hand thrown gr***des, the only difference was the installation of a 7 second fuze instead of 5 seconds.
