On the occasion of International Migrants Day, S.M.A.K. looks back at ‘Gentle Figures/Beautiful Friends’. This publication was the fruit of a collaboration between the museum, LUCA School of Arts and Globe Aroma, an open art centre in Brussels that welcomes newcomers, refugees and asylum seekers to participate in arts and culture. Together with a group of illustration students, the Globe Aroma artists spent two years working on a project about portraits.  Get your hands on this publication.

Or if you wish to contribute, you can, through the sale of postcards (10 pieces at 12 euros) and flags (25 euros) created during the project I Wish I Was My Own Country so I Could Be Home Anywhere. Together with S.M.A.K. you support Médecins Sans Frontières, which is active in Moria, among other places.

Donderdag 6 augustus is Danny Bergeman, een kunstenaar met het syndroom van Down, overleden. Danny was van 2010 tot 2020 aan het werk aan zijn indrukwekkend oeuvre in Kunstwerkplaats en Artotheek De Zandberg.
We koesteren warme herinneringen aan de immer opgewekte persoon die hij was.

Vorig jaar nog stelden we de prestigieuze uitgave 'The Zandberg Drawing' voor, in samenwerking met Jo Coucke (kunsthistoricus) en Peter Van Hecke (Artistiek Mentor Danny) in S.M.A.K..
Hij werkte zeven jaar lang intensief aan het boek in Kunstwerkplaats en Artotheek De Zandberg. Het is zijn levenswerk waarin hij een reflectie neerschrijft op zijn onderzoek in kunstboeken, catalogi en tijdschriften. In de poging om dit commentaar te leveren, ontwikkelt hij een abstract geometrisch notitiesysteem. Hij scant boeken afbeelding per afbeelding, abstraheert elk beeld en inventariseert het in een niet-hiërarchisch systeem dat hij van links naar rechts, en lijn per lijn als een tekst opbouwt.
'The Zandberg Drawing / 2011-2018' is een exacte copy van zijn jarenlang werk.

For the past twenty years the work of Kris Martin has been exhibited worldwide. S.M.A.K. Ghent now is presenting the Belgian public a first retrospective of his intriguing oeuvre. Martin’s sculptures revolve on questions about dead, transience and identity, literature and mythology being his main source of inspiration.

The works of Kris Martin often raise questions about transience, identity, life and death. By subtly altering objects that reside in our collective memory, he creates space for reflection and new interpretations. ‘The Idiot’, a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, is a central motif in the work of Martin. Many of his works carry the name ‘Idiot’, followed by a number, and he regularly refers to the archetype of the Idiot or the Fool. Martin feels kinship with the protagonist Prince Myshkin – the idiot from the title – who is altruistically good but who in the end perishes because of that. In 2005 Martin copied the 1,496 pages of the novel by hand, everywhere replacing the name of Myshkin by his own.

In 2009 the manuscript was published by Aspen Art Press as an edition of 2,000 copies in the form of a bible with thin paper. This edition is sold out. In 2020 DISTANZ published a new edition of the manuscript, on the occasion of the exhibition ‘EXIT’ in S.M.A.K.

The ‘Kleine Catalogus van de Collectie van S.M.A.K’ or 'My Little Companion to the S.M.A.K. Collection' is a catalogue for children and youngsters (in Dutch only). And will be on sale in the museum bookshop from 3 March 2020.

Selected by young visitors (4 to 14 y), the catalogue explores the artworks they feel are the most interesting, sensitive, confusing, beautiful and inspiring and so much more. Out of over 3,000 works, 150 wonderful pieces have found a place in the ‘Kleine Catalogus’.
