Family members, longtime comrades, movement veterans, scholars, and admirers of Assata Shakur plan to gather at Riverside Church on May 30 for a public celebration of her life — a memorial that will affirm the political life Shakur spent decades defending.

Entitled “Carry It On,” the event takes its name from Shakur’s poem “The Tradition,” which appears at the end of her 1987 book, “Assata: An Autobiography.”

When she wrote about the last time she was able to speak with her grandparents before fleeing the United States, Shakur noted that they implored her not to get used to being imprisoned: “Every day out in the street now, I remind myself that Black people in amerika are oppressed,” she wrote. “It’s necessary that I do that. People get used to anything. The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free, you have to be acutely aware of being a slave.”

In that poem, Shakur urges future generations to continue the Black struggle for freedom: “Carry it on now./Carry it on./Carry it on now./Carry it on./Carry on the tradition.”

Today, we honor the strength, sacrifice, resilience, and revolutionary spirit of African people across the continent and throughout the Diaspora.

May 25th marks African Liberation Day — a day that recognizes the hard-fought victories of African nations that fought for and achieved freedom from European colonial rule. It is also a reminder that liberation is not only about independence, but about preserving culture, identity, unity, and self-determination.

At Black Food Bookstore & Culture Shop, we celebrate the enduring legacy of Africa and her People today and every day. ❤️🖤💚

Black Food Bookstore & Culture Shop recently met with representatives from Macmillan Caribbean to discuss opportunities for the upcoming school year.

Charo Morley, Co-Owner of Black Food Bookstore & Culture Shop, met with Eliot Abrahams, Education Consultant, and Theresa McPhee, local representative, for a fruitful discussion centered on educational resources and potential offerings for schools and students.

The meeting allowed both teams to connect, exchange ideas, and explore ways to support the educational needs of the community ahead of the new academic year.

Black Food Bookstore & Culture Shop looks forward to joining the pool of local booksellers who carry Macmillan Caribbean titles.

Mozambique has cleared all its outstanding debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), fully paying 515.04 million Special Drawing Rights (about US$630 million) by the end of March in a move expected to strengthen the country’s prospects for renewed Fund support.

IMF data for March show Mozambique’s credit outstanding falling from 515.04 million SDRs to zero, making it the only country among 85 listed to settle its arrears in full during the period.

According to state-run AIM news agency, the early repayment effectively cancels a repayment schedule that stretched from 2026 to 2029, under which Mozambique was due to pay nearly US$471 million.

The country’s arrears stemmed from the suspension of its Extended Credit Facility programme in April 2025.

Approved in 2022 for about US$468 million, the programme disbursed four tranches totalling roughly US$343 million before being halted.

By February this year, Mozambique’s outstanding credit had reached 226 per cent of its IMF quota and the Fund did not announce any new support at that time.
