Kriol is NOT broken English, and don't let anyone tell you differently! Our Belizean Kriol has roots in many different West African languages as well as British English, and is a language all its own, with its own grammar and syntax rules.

🌍 THEY CALLED IT “BROKEN ENGLISH.”
BUT THESE LANGUAGES CARRY CENTURIES OF HISTORY.

Across the Caribbean and the Americas, English-based Creole languages developed through the meeting of African, European and Indigenous languages—shaped by colonization, slavery, resistance, migration and survival.

From Gullah and Afro-Seminole Creole to Jamaican Patois, Belizean Creole, Bajan, Bahamian Creole, Guyanese Creole and Sranan Tongo, every variety preserves a unique community’s identity and memory.

These are not “incorrect” ways of speaking. They are living linguistic systems with their own vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions and cultural power.

One colonial language produced many extraordinary Caribbean voices.
