My first thought when I seen a Sue Coleman "artwork" in the bathroom at an airbnb was that it's right where it belongs, by the toilet and trash can.
For those who don't know who Sue Coleman is, she is a British "artist" who faced heavy criticism for incorporating Northwest Coast (Formline) art into her own nature and wildlife paintings. First Nation artists and critics condemned her work as cultural appropriation, stating that she profited from stealing cultural property and that the community did not need her to "translate" their sacred art forms.
Coleman, who is not First Nation, defended her practice by describing herself as a "translator" of Indigenous art styles into mainstream, Western-style paintings. She argued that her use of the style was out of respect and inspiration.

Sue Coleman says while she is inspired by the Northwest Coast Indigenous style of art, she is not copying but "translating" Indigenous art work. Indigenous artists call styles of artwork like hers cultural appropriation that needs to be addressed.
