Make sure to follow these tried and true best practices to beef up your M156 for prolonged enjoyment!

1. DIAGNOSE
Visually inspect the valvetrain; remove the engine valve covers and physically inspect and rotate the valvetrain assembly. Check for snapping action of the camshafts when turning the crank. This is a sign that the adjusters are faulty and no longer able to hold home position reliably. You can also view the camshaft position angles using an advanced OBD reader. NOTE: migrating camshaft ACTUAL values from CALLED can result in damage!

2. INSPECT
The M156 valvetrain is not for the feint of heart. Care must be followed to inspect the surroundings. Check the tapper bores for clearance. All tappets have a determined lifespan. Replace with better oiled and fully coated tappets (e.g. M159 Black Series DLC lifters). Inspect the phaser assembly in full and look for wear. Check the phaser covers and bolts for tolerance issues. Follow the bolt sequences for removal and install of fasteners. TAKE YOUR TIME! DO NOT DROP BOLT! Fatigue kills.

3. REPAIR
Each step is a calculated movement. Use nothing but the best tools. There are tight confines when AMG shoehorned big blocks into small chassis. Plan your step, follow through and utilize proper guides and manuals. If you’re not at your 100%, TAKE A BREAK! Be mindful that interference engine valvetrains are complex. Use two M156 timing tools to ensure guaranteed placement of 40°ATDC. This is important in preventing check engine codes, fault free operation and maximizing power.

4. ENJOY
Document your progress. Take plenty of reference photos. Indexing your progress allows for ease of re-install. Know which bolts return to where and replace gaskets, washers, and fasteners for a completely clean assembly. Replace securing ties to complete the OEM look and feel. Take pride in your work!
