What does it mean to be a charity bookshop?
Our store runs on donations, which we store and sell to customers. All proceeds from the sales go towards charitable causes, most of which we have been supporting consistently for years! We also have book sharing programs that support additional causes.
Our LOCAL causes:
JOANNE’S HOUSE 💛
Durham’s only youth-focused emergency shelter, with programs and wrap-around supports focused on youth homelessness prevention, rapid rehousing and housing stabilization.
HERIZON HOUSE 💛
A shelter for abused women and their children. Herizon House maintains a seamless and comprehensive network of services for women who have been victimized by violence.
Our INTERNATIONAL cause:
GIVE AND RESTORE HOPE CHILDREN’S CHARITY 💛
Since 2012, Give and Restore Hope has supported schools in the Philippines with shipments of donated books, school supplies, and scholarships. Each partnership ensures resources are used well and continue making a difference in students’ lives.
How we function 💛:
DONATIONS
We do not buy books; all of our books are secondhand, donated by someone in our community. Please see our previous post for our donation guidelines.
VOLUNTEERS
Our staff is made up entirely of volunteers. Dozens of community members have donated their time to making New Friends Book Shop a success over the years, and we are so grateful to them.
LOCAL PARTNERS:
We often receive donations from our friends at Ajax Public Library.
When we don’t have the capacity to house all our donations in the store, we share them with local Sally Anne shops, Value Villages, and secondhand stores.
And of course, all of you who donate to us! Your donations make our fundraising and financial donations possible, so thank you to our New Friends community! 💛📚😊
