4⭐ Death in the Air by Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie was one of my mother-in-law's favourite authors (to the point where Agatha Christie mystery shows are now a permanent fixture in my BritBox TV algorithm). After her passing, I decided to pick up one of the many books she owned, in memory of her.
While I have never read anything by Agatha Christie, I was familiar with Hercule Poirot as a character and was familiar with a few of Christie's most famous stories. After reading this one, I now understand how she was, at a time, the most read author in the world (and is still the 3rd most translated in the world, only behind the Bible and Shakespeare).
In 1934 on a flight between France and England, a notorious moneylender is found dead, suspected to have been murdered by a poison dart. The suspects include eleven people who were assigned to the cabin during the flight, one of who is M. Poirot himself.
Throughout the investigation in the weeks after the event, and with the help of some of the involved passengers, the case is solved with a great twist that could have easily been missed. (For the record, the twist I half concluded to earlier in the story, but as for the actual murderer, I was way off!)
This was a very fast-paced read, with lots of action right from the get go. A lot of information is dumped in the first chapter setting up all the characters/suspects, but aside from that it was very easy to follow. The characters were well thought out and quite entertaining.
If you like cozy mysteries but have never read anything by Christie, I definitely recommend checking out this or one of the many other modern classics by her.
We don't have this particular title in the shop, but we do have a couple others, starting at $12.99.
