Found in an attic. And it stops you cold.
Bid now: https://bid.maregold.com
This is not a weekend market find. This is a 119-year-old oil painting by James Louis Weston — one of the most significant names in early Canadian art — hauled out of storage and into the light for the first time in who knows how long.
Painted in 1906, at the absolute peak of his career.
A turquoise wave explodes against dark coastal rock. Two sea stacks stand like sentinels in churning surf. The storm sky tears open above them. And the impasto on those rocks — you don't just see the weight, you feel it.
Weston didn't come from nowhere. His father, James Weston Sr., was a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists. This painting carries that bloodline in every brushstroke.
Signed. Dated. Original period gilt gesso frame with ornate corner detail. The whole thing intact, exactly as it left his studio.
119 years old. Still commanding the room.

Late addition!
Paris in the Rain — The Way You Always Imagined It
Lot 51, bid now https://bid.maregold.com
The Arc de Triomphe sits in the middle distance, half dissolved in grey light. On the wet street below, figures move under the haze — Rambert's signature "clothespin people," loose and gestural, alive without being fussy. Café awnings, tree canopies, reflections on the pavement. The whole city caught in that particular mood that only Paris seems to own.
René Rambert was born in France in 1901 and spent a long career painting exactly this — the impressionistic heartbeat of Paris. Thick impasto, rain-slicked streets, the Arc appearing again and again like an old friend. He signed his work variously as P. Rambert, R. Rambert, or René Rambert, and his paintings found their way into homes across the world for good reason. They're warm. They're accomplished. And they make you feel like you've been somewhere.
This is an original oil on canvas. Signed lower right: P. Rambert.

The Road Into Winter
Lot 12 bid now at https://bid.maregold.com
Farmhouses with smoke curling from the chimneys. A covered bridge over an icy stream. A horse and sleigh on the road below. A church spire on the hillside and purple mountains filling the distance beyond.
Aldro Thompson Hibbard spent a lifetime painting New England winters and nobody did it better. Trained at the Boston Museum School under Edmund Tarbell, founder of the Rockport Art Colony, exhibited at the Venice Biennale — his original oils hang in the Smithsonian, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Portland Museum of Art. When Hibbard painted snow, you felt the cold.
This is a vintage colour serigraph, hand-enhanced with pastels — a technique that gives the image a warmth and depth a straight print simply can't match. Every piece slightly different by hand. Framed and ready to hang.
A beautiful way to live with one of America's finest winter landscape painters.
Signed in the plate lower left: A.T. Hibbard. Image size 24 × 30 inches. Please note: reproduction print, not an original painting.

The Bear on the Ice
Lot 38 On-line auction - Bid now https://bid.maregold.com
A polar bear stands on a dark rocky outcrop, alert and still. Around it, open Arctic water. In the distance, two icebergs rise from a pale blue-grey sea. Above, an overcast sky that seems to go on forever.
Marie Bellemare painted this in 1979 — right in the middle of a decade when Canada was falling hard for its own north. The subject matter was everywhere, but work this quiet and this accomplished was not. This is a large, ambitious pastel handled with real confidence. The ice has translucency. The fur catches reflected cold light. The sky and water breathe.
Bellemare doesn't appear in the major auction databases — a Quebec name, likely a regional artist who never chased recognition. Which means this one has been sitting somewhere, unseen, for a long time.
Sometimes that's exactly where the best things are found.
Signed and dated lower left — Marie Bellemare, 1979. Pastel on paper. Sight: 17½ x 23½ in.· 1979 17½ x 23½ in Lot 38 - Bidding closes May 24, 2026 https://bid.maregold.com

Tall Scots pines filling the foreground. A white thatched cottage sitting quietly in the valley below. Fields rolling green and easy toward distant blue hills. And on the far right horizon, almost like an afterthought — a church spire reaching up through the haze.
W.H. Wright didn't labour over this. You can feel it in the brushwork — confident, expressive impasto laid down by someone who understood exactly what they were doing. This is plein air painting the way it's supposed to be. Paint mixed with real light. A scene that existed, captured by someone standing in it.
Wright is a listed Canadian artist with a genuine auction record. A Gatineau Farmhouse by his hand sold through Waddington's Fine Art in Toronto — one of Canada's most respected auction houses. This isn't a decorative curiosity. It's a collected work by a documented painter with a paper trail.
Oil on board. Signed lower right. The kind of landscape that makes a room feel like it has a soul.
Britain seen through Canadian eyes. Quiet, confident, and completely alive.
