Join us this Saturday as we celebrate the longest day of the year in historic downtown Armstrong. Tourism Armstrong Spallumcheen has done an amazing job of putting this event together, there will be live music, food and many business will have something special planned. Bookish Collective and PV BLVD| Specialty Coffee, Tea and Baked Goods| Armstrong BC will have Maven Greenwood doing free tarot readings from 4-8pm. We can’t wait to celebrate summer with all of you!

Radclyffe Hall [1880-1943] was a poet, novelist, and short story writer known as an early proponent of le***an rights, with several works touching on homosexuality in a sympathetic light. Born Marguerite, in adulthood she often went by the name John. Hall had several romantic relationships with women, with most ending due to marriage. At 27, Hall met Mabel Batten, and the two moved in together after the death of Batten’s husband. After Batten’s death, Hall quickly moved in with Una Troubridge, a sculpter, and the two remained together until Hall’s death.
“The Well of Loneliness”, written in 1928, was a breakthrough in le***an literature. In the UK, it was declared “obscene” and all copies were ordered to be destroyed, but a lengthy court battle allowed it to be printed in the US, and it to continue to be read.
At 63, after retiring to the small, writer-filled town of Rye, East Sussex alongside Troubridge, Hall passed away from cancer.

Thank you to everyone for all the support regarding this issue with my building. It’s just an awning, but perhaps it became a symbol of people’s frustration regarding this project downtown. The city has now agreed to replace the awning along with assistance from a grant the Chamber of Commerce was approved for. It won’t be identical, but similar in style and appropriate for an older, historic building.

This has been a stressful week, and I am humbled by all the support. First, thanks to Lori Galdino from What the Thrift, who never signed up for any of this when she opened her business here. Also, many thanks to Kristy at PV Blvd., the wonderful gals at The Bookish Collective, and Abbey Law Corporation. And those who wrote letters etc. to the city…it was a great help. I had former councillors, an engineer, a volunteer at the museum, and many dozens of local residents popping by the store to offer advice and support.

Moving forward…the city’s new concept and look for the town is now “heritage” rather than country western. But heritage is simply another word for history. We mustn’t forget that.

Our neighbours at Canadian Royal Antiques post and What the Thrift have received confirmation in writing from the city that the repairs to their building will be covered. This means that Monday the awning will be taken down. The sidewalk will be closed in front of their building. If you’d like to pop by our store for books and tea please utilize the parking along the blvd by shepherds. As always, there is ample broom parking on the roof and parallel parking along wood ave.
