Some people have the luxury of being able to go to a store and buy expensive gifts for their spouse and not have to worry about the money that they spend.
We don't get to do that. For us it always comes down to a choice of instant gratification verses reaching our financial goals and It's our long-term goals that usually win out.
That's why, when I have the chance use the talents that God gave me and build something that my wife wants, it really means alot to me.
Recently our dishwasher crapped out and the cabinet it was enclosed in was falling apart as well.
I found a good replacement dishwasher and installed it and then decided to upgrade the old cabinets as well. I've had some Maple drying in the garage that I cut down in our yard a few years ago. I decided to make the counter top out of that. It was a little bit tricky finding just the right live edge section that contoured around the buttons in the top but we got it done.
The base was just a simple knock together box with 3/4" maple plywood and a little bit of edge banding. The only tricky part here was trying to match the stain to our existing cabinets but after a few tries on some scrap pieces we got it really close.
All in all the whole project turned out really nice. My wife is happy and that makes me happy, and we saved a pile of money which makes us both happy.

These are the cookies that I was cutting in the last video. A customer of ours wants to use two of them to make a set of end tables with.
I think they're going to look great.

If you don't have a debarker on your mill. For a couple hundred bucks and a spare chainsaw the Log Wizard is a pretty handy option.

I think I need to plan a roof over the sawmill. Shoveling this thing out is really high on the "Things that suck list".

I don't know what they do in the rest of the world but this is how we get a diesel engine running in Northern Saskatchewan after it's been sitting in a snowbank for about a month.

Not bad temps today compared to what we've had. It's only minus 22 celsius but a pretty stiff northwest wind.
So here's the process.
Tarp it in, propane tiger torch, propane sunflower heater, electronic circulating block heater, battery charger and the pickup boosting.
Bake it on high and do something else for a couple of hours. In my case this was a whole lot of that shovel style cardio. When it feels like summer time under the tarp go ahead and fire it up.
Easy peasy, right? 😂

I was looking back this morning at some of my favorite photos from the past couple of years and thinking about my little family and how lucky we are to have a Statutory holiday called Family Day.
Even though we've been stuck in this brutally cold deep freeze for well over a month I really hope that you can all get out today and spend some time with the ones you love.
Happy Family Day everyone.

First time getting back to the Sawmill since the big storm last week. It makes a pretty picture but I think I'm going to need a bigger shovel.

A much better way to manage our forests. Good for Nova Scotia. I really hope that Saskatchewan will wake up and follow suit.

There is a growing sentiment in the forestry industry that employing the recommendations of the Lahey report will lead to new opportunities and better forests.
