Nature’s tiniest little home! ❤️

We found this Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest on the ground and couldn’t believe how small it is. Built with soft materials, spider silk and often decorated with lichen for camouflage, these tiny nests are true works of art. 🪹

Ruby-throated Hummingbird nests are carefully built with soft plant material and spider silk, often covered with bits of lichen to help them blend into their surroundings. It’s hard to believe something so tiny once held a family with two hummingbird babies!

Hummingbird migration is underway, be sure to keep those feeders clean and your nectar is fresh! Keep those feeders out to help fuel migrating hummingbirds as they make their long journey south! ✈️💖

Goldfinch fledglings will be showing up at feeders any day now! 💛

Fledglings can be difficult to tell apart from adult females as they are very similar in appearance and size, but watching their behaviour can help you sort out who's who. Fledglings will typically be sitting in a tree or bush close to the feeders, or on the feeders themselves but not feeding on their own, and you will notice that they "beg" for food when an adult is near. This action looks like a lot of mouth gaping, wing flapping, and screaming 😆 until they are fed.

American Goldfinches are strict vegetarians and prefer to feed on small seeds such as Nyjer or our Finch Blend which is a mix of both Nyjer seed and fine sunflower chips. 🌻
