June is national Indigenous history month!
Learning about our pasts help orient ourselves in the present and guide us into a better collective future. You can find all of these fantastic books by Indigenous authors on our front table, and we've added a list to highlight these and more on our website!
Here are some great resources to get started:
- whose.land and native-land.ca offer various maps of Indigenous communities, languages, and the treaties across Turtle Island and beyond
- humanrights.ca has numerous pages on Indigenous history, including residential schools, and also one on the ongoing violence against Indigenous girls, women, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Link: https://humanrights.ca/resource-guide/missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-girls-and-2slgbtqi-people
- For folks living within the Loyalist Township and Kingston area, I'd highly recommend reading about the Crawford purchase of 1783. Even last night, I was also reading about the Two Row Wampum, which is a treaty between the Dutch and Haudensaunee people established on mutual respect and connection.
- I'd also love to personally recommend David A. Robertson's book "52 Ways to Reconcile"! Reconciliation is an intimidating word, but reading this felt like Robertson was taking my hand and walking alongside me.
